Beatrice Deer, gagnante de plusieurs prix pour sa musique, a récemment publié ᑎᕆᒐᓐᓂᐊᑉ ᐊᕐᓇᖓ The Fox Wife, un livre pour enfant disponible en Inuktitut et anglais. Durant une nuit d’été, un renard arrive sur terre et tombe sur une famille d’humain. Les saisons changent et ils bougent vers d’autres campements, le renard les suit, avec une curiosité des manières humaines grandissante, plus particulièrement pour le fils ainé Irniq. Ce roman graphique est une interprétation d’une histoire traditionnelle inuite. ‘’Parce que la langue fait partie de notre identité, c’est important de l’utiliser, de la promouvoir; nous avons besoins de publier des chansons et des livres en Inuktitut pour que les gens puissent l’entendre’’ dit Béatrice. Aussi connue pour sa musique d’où elle mélange les paroles en anglais et en Inuktitut, Beatrice dit que ‘’Ayant l’Inuktitut comme langue maternelle, évidemment, il est plus facile de m’exprimer en Inuktitut. Il y a certains mots que nous ne pouvons simplement pas traduire en anglais ou en français et que tu ne peux que le dire en Inuktitut pour dire ce que tu veux vraiment exprimer.’’ Beatrice témoigne également sur le futur de sa langue: ‘’ il y a environ 98 à 99% de personnes qui parlent en Inuktitut au Nunavik ce qui est vraiment bien mais je vois un déclin dans le vocabulaire. Il y a certains mots que je ne comprends pas mais que les personnes des générations précédentes comprennent et c’est effrayant. Je vois beaucoup d’effort pour préserver et promouvoir l’inuktitut et je crois que c’est possible de continuer et même de s’améliorer, alors, oui, j’ai espoir!’’
Award-winning musician Beatrice Deer recently published ᑎᕆᒐᓐᓂᐊᑉ ᐊᕐᓇᖓ The Fox Wife, a children book available in Inuktitut and English. On a cloudless summer night, a fox falls to earth and comes across a family of humans. As the seasons change and they move their camp, she follows them, growing ever more intrigued by human ways‚ and especially by the oldest son, Irniq. This graphic novel reinterprets a traditional Inuit story. « Because language is part of our identity and it’s important to promote it, use it, we need to publish books song so people can hear it » Beatrice says. Also well know for her music, where she uses a mixt of Inuktitut/English lyrics, Beatrice says «having Inuktitut as a first language of course, it’s easier to express myself in Inuktitut. There are some words that you just can’t translate into English or French that you can only say in Inuktitut and say what you really want to say. » About the future of her language, « So far, there is about 98 to 99% Inuktitut speaker in Nunavik which is really good but I do see a decline in vocabulary. They are some words I do not understand but the older generations understand and that is frightening. I do see a lot of effort in preserving and promoting Inuktitut and I think it’s possible to remain or even improve so yeah, I’m hopeful! »
