Ce mois-ci, nous aimerions vous présenter Kayla-Jazz Annanack-Lauzon, la nouvelle agente de programme d’Aumaaggiivik. Nous sommes très heureux qu’une artiste soit ici pour soutenir d’autres artistes et le développement des arts au Nunavik. Kayla pratique le perlage et est une couturière qui a grandie à Kuujjuaq. Elle a sa propre marque, August Beadwork, nommée en l’honneur de son père qui l’a beaucoup soutenue, août étant le mois de sa naissance. Elle a acquis ses connaissances et son expérience de façon autodidacte, bien qu’elle ait appris les rudiments de la couture et du perlage à l’école et auprès de membres de sa famille.
Lorsque la pandémie a frappé en 2020, ne pouvant plus vendre en personne, ses sœurs l’ont poussée à ouvrir un compte sur Instagram pour vendre et expédier ses produits. Sa famille l’a toujours soutenue dans son travail et trois ans plus tard, on peut dire que sa marque s’est fait un nom au Nunavik et qu’elle est associée à un artisanat de haute qualité et à la fiabilité.
Comme elle développe son propre style, elle passe beaucoup de temps sur ses pièces; une simple paire de boucles d’oreilles peut prendre jusqu’à cinq heures à créer, selon le style qu’elle lui donne. Le silapaaq (chandail à manches longues), les pualuit (mitaines) et les parkas nécessitent également beaucoup de temps. À tout cela, elle aimerait ajouter un peu plus, comme prendre des cours d’imprimerie et de tatouage traditionnel. Sa créativité est débordante et elle déclare : “De pouvoir donner vie à ce que j’ai dans la tête est assez impressionnant”.

This month we would like to introduce you to Kayla-Jazz Annanack-Lauzon, Aumaaggiivik’s new Program Agent. We are very happy that an artist is here to support other artists and the development of the arts in Nunavik. Kayla is a beader and a seamstress who grew up in Kuujjuaq. She has her own brand, called August Beadwork named to honor her father who supported her a lot, choosing August, as it was his birth month. Her knowledge and experience are mostly through self-teaching, although she learnt basics of sewing and beading at school and from family members.
When the pandemic hit in 2020, she couldn’t sell in person, so her sisters pushed her to start an Instagram account to sell and ship her products. Her family has always been supportive of her work and three years after, we can say that her brand had made a name in Nunavik and is associated to high quality craft and reliability.
As she develops her own style, she spends a fair amount of time on her pieces; a simple pair of earrings can take up to five hours to make, depending on its style. Silapaaq (thin sweater), pualuit (mittens) and parkas also need a lot of time to do. On top of that, she would like to add a little more, like taking print making courses and traditional tattooing. Her creativity is blowing and she says: “Being able to bring to life what is in my head into reality is pretty awesome.”
