Fondatrice de Yaya inspirations et chanteuse de gorge, Janice Parsons est bien connue pour l’originalité de ses boucles d’oreilles en peau de phoque. Elle en fait depuis l’âge de 13 ans. Ses parents l’ont toujours encouragée, et lui achetaient les matériaux nécessaires et la laissaient prendre des retailles de peau de phoque de sa mère pour faire de l’art et de l’artisanat. Vue comme la « fashionista » de la famille, Janice en faisait tous les jours pendant sa jeunesse, pour assortir à sa tenue et c’était sa grande joie et fierté d’en faire pour sa famille et amis. Sa plus grande inspiration était son grand-père, feu Charlie Gordon, qui a ouvert le magasin le plus fiable du village de Kuujjuaq, le Newviq’vi. Elle le surnommait Yaya, d’où vient le nom Yaya Inspirations. Janice utilise beaucoup de références sur la culture inuit pour son art, comme le fameux ulu (couteau pour femme). Avec le temps, elle a beaucoup exploré afin de créer un design original.
Elle a aussi fait des cours de chant et de chants de gorge dès l’âge de 7 ans, ce qui fait d’elle une artiste multidisciplinaire depuis son jeune âge. Son conjoint, Sandy Emudluk, a secrètement appris le chant de gorge en écoutant Janice, et un jour l’a surprise en la joignant. Ce moment d’émotion fut le début de leur duo, et Sandy joue aussi du tambour traditionnel. Son support dans son parcours créatif au fil du temps et aux moments difficiles lui a fait dire : « Il m’a ouvert la voie vers mes rêves ».
Quand Janice commence un projet, elle va y travailler pendant des heures consécutives, puisqu’elle trouve ça thérapeutique. Tellement que ses mains peuvent avoir des crampes pour quelques jours. « Tout est dans l’art, aucun mot n’est nécessaire. » explique-t-elle sur comment l’art dirige sa vie.
Non seulement elle a du talent en art, mais aussi dans les chiffres. Elle a travaillé au Newviq’vi pendant onze ans et pour l’OMHK, en comptabilité pendant six ans. Son savoir pour les affaires et son implication chez les jeunes du Nunavik en tant que présidente du Qarjuit Youth Council l’a amené à en accomplir beaucoup. Elle a créé Yaya Inspirations toute seule, trouvant la force pour affronter les difficultés qui se sont présentées sur son chemin. Elle n’a jamais imaginé qu’elle allait accomplir autant de choses dans la vie. Elle dit que sa gentillesse et son amour pour les personnes a sûrement joué un rôle dans le processus. C’est une personne qui aime donner et voir les autres heureux.

Founder of Yaya inspirations and throats singer, Janice Parsons is well known for her original seal skin earrings. She is making earrings since the age of thirteen. Her parents were always supportive, and they would buy her supplies and let her take scrapes of seal skin from her mother to make arts and crafts. Seen as the fashionista of the family, the young Janice would make some daily, to match her outfit and it would be her great pride and joy to make some as gifts for family. Her biggest inspiration is her grandfather, the late Charlie Gordon, who started and opened the Newviq’vi store, which is the most trusted store in the village of Kuujjuaq. She would call him Yaya, which is where she got the name Yaya Inspirations. She uses a lot of Inuit culture references in her art, like the famous ulu (women’s knife). She explored a lot throughout the years to come up with her original designs.
She also used to take singing/throat singing classes at the age of seven, so we can safely say she is a multidisciplinary artist since her childhood. Her boyfriend, Sandy Emudluk, secretly learned throat singing while listening to her practicing and one day, surprised her by joining her. This very emotional moment was the start of their duo, Sandy also plays drums along with her. His support in her creative path as well and in difficult times in life make her say: “He opened me up to my dreams”.
When Janice starts a project, she will be working on it for hours, as she finds it therapeutic. So much that her hands can cramp up and hurt for couple of days. “It’s all in the art, words are not needed” she says about how creation drives her life.
Not only did she gain talent as an artist, but she also has a great talent in numbers. She’s worked in the Kuujjuaq Newviq’vi shop for eleven years and for KMHB, in the accounting area for six years. Her business knowledge as well as her implication as the President of Qarjuit Youth Council led her to accomplish a lot. For Yaya Inspiration, she does everything alone, finding strength through the difficulties that can occur. She never imagined that she would achieve this much in her life. She says her kindness and her love for other people probably had to do a lot in the process. She’s a person who loves giving and seeing others happy. Her brand Yaya Inspirations will showcase her latest creations at the Northern Lights Trade Show in Ottawa. Janice will also perform during the event in duo with Sandy.
