Nicolas Pirti-Duplessis, originaire d’Akulivik et résidant maintenant à Montréal est un musicien qui aime apprendre de nouvelles choses tous les jours, que ce soit à son travail à l’Institut culturel Avataq ou ailleurs. Nicolas a commencé à jouer de la guitare à l’âge de 14 ans. Après son premier emploi d’été à Akulivik, il a voyagé dans le sud pour voir son père avant la rentrée scolaire. Arrivé à Montréal, il envisageait de s’acheter un nouveau vélo de montagne avec l’argent qu’il avait économisé, mais son père qui le voyait jouer avec sa guitare l’amena au magasin de musique Steve’s. Il se souvient encore comment il était émerveillé lorsqu’il est entré au magasin pour la première fois et qu’il a vu toutes sortes de guitares accrochées au mur. Après cette visite, il est allé au magasin de vélos mais tout ce qu’il avait en tête était les guitares, il était un peu embarrassé de dire à son père qu’il voulait une guitare à la place.
Son père qui lui a appris à jouer puis Nicolas a commencé à apprendre par lui-même et s’est également exercé au chant. Il a pratiqué des chansons de Linkin Park, Metallica, Nirvana et bien d’autres. Il a commencé à écrire ses propres chansons et dit qu’il apprend continuellement, même aujourd’hui. La musique a toujours été son passe-temps favori. « Je me souviens avoir joué devant des gens quand j’avais 14 ans à Akulivik, j’étais vraiment stressé. J’ai commencé à m’y habituer au fur et à mesure que je jouais, et aujourd’hui, jouer devant des gens, c’est la meilleure sensation. » témoigne-t-il.
Sa musique se compose principalement de rock alternatif, allant de la guitare acoustique au heavy métal, chanté en trois langues : inuktitut, anglais et français. Arctistic est le nom qu’il a donné à son groupe, à l’époque où il jouait avec ses amis d’enfance à Akulivik. « C’est un jeu de mots : Akulivik est situé sous le cercle arctique dans la toundra, c’est donc Arctistic ». Son premier album, Ukiuq, sorti en novembre 2019, a souffert de la pandémie et Nicolas a dû mettre sa promotion sur la glace pendant plusieurs mois. Maintenant Nicolas est très excité de reprendre le projet.
Pour Nicolas, la musique est un bon moyen de se rassembler : « Quand il y a des festivals de musique, c’est toujours bon de voir des gens de la communauté et de n’importe où venir jouer ou aller voir le festival. Il y a tellement d’Inuit talentueux. J’encourage tout le monde à faire de l’art, de la musique, des sculptures et bien d’autres. J’aimerais voir plus d’artistes émerger et inspirer les jeunes générations à faire de l’art. »
Nouvelle : Nicolas jouera à Kuujjuaraapik, le 1er septembre pour la Journée de l’habitation. Il y aura beaucoup d’autres artistes à voir. Le spectacle débutera à 16h30 et sera diffusée en direct sur la radio de TNI 94.1 et sur leur site internet www.tni-rtn.com.
Nicolas Pirti-Duplessis, originally from Akulivik and now living in Montreal, is a musician who loves to learn new things everyday either from his work at Avataq Cultural Institute or elsewhere. Nicolas started playing guitar when he was fourteen years old. After his first summer job in Akulivik, he travelled south to see his father before school started. When he got to Montreal, he planned on buying a new mountain bike with the money he saved but his father, who saw him playing with his guitar, brought him to Steve’s Music Store. He still remembers how he was amazed when he first got in the store and saw all kinds of guitars hanging on the wall. After this visit, he went to the bike shop but all he had in mind were the guitars, he was a little embarrassed to tell his dad he wanted a guitar instead.
Nicolas’ father taught him how to play and then he started to learn by himself and practiced singing as well. He practiced songs from Linkin Park, Metallica, Nirvana and many more. He started writing his own songs and says that he is continuously learning even today. Music has always been his favorite hobby. “I remember playing in front of people when I was fourteen years old in Akulivik, I was really stressed. I started getting used to it the more I played, and today, it’s the best feeling to play in front of people.” he says.
His music mostly consists of Alternative Rock, going from acoustic guitar to heavy metal, sung in three languages: Inuktitut, English, and French. Arctistic is the name he came up with for his band, back when he was playing with his childhood friends in Akulivik. “It’s a word play: Akulivik is located below the arctic circle in the tundra, so it’s Arctistic”. His debut album, Ukiuq, released in November 2019 suffered from the pandemic and Nicolas had to put its promotion on hold. Now Nicolas is very excited to start moving forward again.
Nicolas shares how music is a good way to gather together: “When there are music festivals, it’s always good to see people in the community and from anywhere coming in to play or to go watch the festival. There are so many talented Inuit. I encourage everyone to make art, music, sculptures and many more. I would like to see more artists emerge and inspire the younger generations to make art.”
