Jimmy Uqittuq est originaire de Kangirsujuaq o\u00f9 il a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9lev\u00e9 durant la majorit\u00e9 de son adolescence par sa grand-m\u00e8re, Lalie Uqittuq. Jimmy pratique la danse du tambour, il est chanteur de gorge et professeur.
\nAu d\u00e9but de son adolescence, il voit pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vison quelqu\u2019un jouer le tambour traditionnel. Il a observ\u00e9 de tr\u00e8s proche les mouvements et y \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s fascin\u00e9. Il a demand\u00e9 \u00e0 sa grand-m\u00e8re: \u00ab Est-ce que tu connais la dance du tambour, vue ou entendue parl\u00e9? \u00bb Il a ri en \u00e9voquant ce souvenir.
\nNon seulement il \u00e9tait fascin\u00e9 par la danse du tambour, mais il \u00e9tait aussi curieux \u00e0 propos du katatjak (chant de gorge). Ses tentes, Siurjuk Ashoona and Qaunnaq Mikkigaq, de Cape Dorset du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de son p\u00e8re, l\u2019a \u00e9merveill\u00e9 durant sa performance. Sa grand-m\u00e8re l\u2019a entendu se pratiquer plusieurs fois dans sa chambre, et a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de lui donner un ukkusik, un chaudron pour qu\u2019il puisse s\u2019entendre. Le jeune homme a chant\u00e9 avec son fr\u00e8re durant les jeux de No\u00ebl a Kangirsujuaq et a \u00e9t\u00e9 encourag\u00e9 par les compliments suivant leur performance.
\nDurant 20 ans, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 professeur d\u2019\u00e9ducation physique \u00e0 Kangirsujuaq. Il a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de d\u00e9m\u00e9nager \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al pour ofrrir une meilleure \u00e9ducation \u00e0 ses enfants, et au m\u00eame moment, Nunavik Sivunitsavut (NS) a commenc\u00e9. Il y a \u00e9t\u00e9 animateur avant de devenir professeur. Jimmy est heureux que NS ait d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d\u2019inclure des cours de danse du tambour. Lors de la 1e et la 2e ann\u00e9e, ils ont offer un atelier de fabrication de qillautik (tambour), mais Jimmy, trop occup\u00e9 \u00e0 aider les autres, n\u2019avait pas pu faire son propre qillautik. Par chance, durant la 3e ann\u00e9e, sous les enseignements de David Iirlu, il a finalement pu le faire. Il y aussi particip\u00e9 \u00e0 un atelier pour les jeunes adultes a Kuujjuaraapik il y a deux ans, o\u00f9 il a pu en apprendre plus sur l\u2019instrument.
\n\u00ab Lorsque je joue du tambour, c\u2019est comme si j\u2019\u00e9tais dans une session de gu\u00e9rison. C\u2019est une partie de ma th\u00e9rapie, je suis dans ma zone. Je suis enti\u00e8rement moi-m\u00eame. \u00bb
\nEn 2021 ainsi qu\u2019en 2023 \u00e0 Kangirsujuaq, il participa a ses premi\u00e8res performances publiques . Puis en mars 2022, il est parti \u00e0 Iqaluit avec une \u00e9tudiante, Phoebe Oweetaluktuk, durant la 3e cohorte de NS. Cette ann\u00e9e en septembre, Jimmy est all\u00e9 \u00e0 Nuuk au Groenland au festival de danse de tambour, Katuarpalaaq. Contact\u00e9 par Sylvia Cloutier, danceuse de tambour reconnue, alors \u00e0 la recherche des meilleurs performeurs du Nunavik. Il a beaucoup aim\u00e9 son exp\u00e9rience duquel il consid\u00e8re avoir beaucoup appris et \u00e7a l\u2019a redu tr\u00e8s heureux. Il explique: \u00ab Leur fa\u00e7on de jouer est diff\u00e9rente; physiquement c\u2019est plus petit et ils sont plus spirituel avant et durant la performance. Le festival, pour eux c\u2019est honorer la vie.\u201d\n\n\n\n

Jimmy Uqittuq is from Kangirsujuaq and grew up his whole teenage years with his grandmother, Lalie Uqittuq. Jimmy is a drummer, throat singer and teacher.
\nIn his early teens, he saw drum dancing for the first time on television. He watched it very closely, the movements of the dancers, and was fascinated by them. He asked his grandmother: \u201cDo you know about drum dancing, seen or heard about it?\u201d He laughed at the memory.
\nNot only he was fascinated by drumming, but he also got curious about katatjak (throat singing). His aunts, Siurjuk Ashoona and Qaunnaq Mikkigaq, from Cape Dorset on his dad side, mesmerized him while she performed. His grandmother heard him practice in his room multiple times, and decided to give him an ukkusik, cooking pot to be able to hear himself. The young man sang with his brother when it was time for Christmas games in Kangirsujuaq. He was encouraged by the compliments he got afterwards.
\nFor 20 years, he worked as a gym teacher in Kangirsujuaq. He decided to move to Montreal to access a better education for his children, and at the same time Nunavik Sivunitsavut (NS) started. He was an animator before teaching and he is happy NS decided to teach drum dancing. For the 1st and 2nd year, they did a workshop, showing how to make a qillautik (drum), but Jimmy, too busy running around helping, couldn\u2019t make his own qillautik. Luckily on the 3rd year, taught by David Iirlu, he was finally able to. There was also a workshop in Kuujjuaraapik, two years ago, for young adults, where he learned more about the instrument.
\n\u201cI feel in a healing session when I drum. Part of my therapy, I\u2019m in my zone. Just being myself.\u201d
\nHis first public performance was in 2021 in Kangirsujuaq, and in 2023 as well. Then on March 2022, he traveled to Iqaluit with Phoebe Oweetaluktuk, a NS students in the 3rd cohorte. This year in September, Jimmy went to Nuuk, in Greenland to attend the drum dancing festival, Katuarpalaaq. He was reached out by renowned drum dancer Sylvia Cloutier who was looking for the best Nunavik performer to attend this event that gather traditional drumming performers from all Inuit Nunangat. Over there, he learned a lot. He found it to be a beautiful experience, it made him very happy. He explains: \u201cTheir drumming is different; physically it\u2019s smaller and they are more spiritual before and during the performance. This festival, for them is to honor life.\u201d\n\n\n\n
