Originaire de Kangirsuk, Phebe Bentley est couturi\u00e8re, artiste, joailli\u00e8re et autrice. Elle occupe aussi le poste de Directrice des Services \u00e9tudiants post-secondaire \u00e0 Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (KI).
\nEn grandissant, Phebe est d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9e quelques fois. Elle a v\u00e9cu \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al alors que sa m\u00e8re, Lolly Annahatak, \u00e9tudiait \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 McGill, ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 Kuujjuaq pendant que son p\u00e8re, Peter Bentley, \u00e9tait le directeur de l\u2019\u00e9cole Jaanimmarik, o\u00f9 elle a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 et gradu\u00e9.

\nLa premi\u00e8re fois qu\u2019Inuit Art Quarterly l\u2019a approch\u00e9, en 2021, ils lui ont demand\u00e9 de faire un article sur une \u0153uvre d\u2019art peu connue pour leur publication en ligne. Elle a accept\u00e9 le d\u00e9fi et a choisi une sculpture que sa m\u00e8re poss\u00e8de. Au cours de ses recherches, elle a d\u00e9couvert que c\u2019\u00e9tait un membre de la famille qui l\u2019avait fait, Johnny Inukpuk. Elle \u00e9crit pour IAQ depuis ce temps. Le dernier profil de Phebe porte sur une estampe de l\u2019artiste Inupiaq Sarah Ayaqi Whalen Lunn. Elle l\u2019a choisie parce que l\u2019\u0153uvre raisonnait en elle. \u00c0 premi\u00e8re vue, une femme li\u00e9e par des cordes et attach\u00e9e \u00e0 un ut\u00e9rus a les yeux couverts et les cheveux d\u00e9tach\u00e9s : \u00ab Il y avait tellement d\u2019angles qui \u00e9mergeaient de ce dessin. J\u2019aurais pu \u00e9crire tr\u00e8s longtemps mais il y avait une limite de mots. \u00bb C\u2019\u00e9tait un processus tr\u00e8s \u00e9motif. Phebe a fait un amalgame int\u00e9ressant entre sa vie personnelle et le discours politique qui \u00e9merge de l\u2019\u0153uvre, un m\u00e9lange de col\u00e8re envers les politiques am\u00e9ricaines et le reste du monde qui suit tranquillement cette voix. Travailler sur ce profil lui a permis d\u2019avoir un reflet de ce qui affecte les femmes, sp\u00e9cialement les jeunes femmes Inuit et leur habilet\u00e9 \u00e0 consentir, sans oublier la crise actuelle des femmes et filles autochtones disparues et assassin\u00e9es. \u00ab Tout de suite j\u2019ai su quoi \u00e9crire. \u00bb Ajoute-t-elle. Elle esp\u00e8re que le profil va apporter justice et sensibiliser \u00e0 ces probl\u00e8mes, d\u00e9montrer que de plus en plus de droits humains sont graduellement supprim\u00e9s. Elle a jug\u00e9 la conversation trop pressante et pertinente pour rester silencieuse m\u00eame s\u2019il y avait possibilit\u00e9 de r\u00e9percussions : \u00ab \u00eatre capable d\u2019aborder les sujets tabous est important. \u00bb
\nNon seulement Phebe a la plume facile, mais elle fait aussi de la joaillerie. C\u2019\u00e9tait juste avant la fameuse pand\u00e9mie; elle campait \u00e0 Kangirsuk avec sa tante. La couturi\u00e8re-\u00e9crivaine a r\u00e9colt\u00e9 des bois de caribou et de l\u2019ivoire sur le territoire. Elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 les couper avec une scie \u00e0 main, et des outils facile d\u2019utilisation. De fa\u00e7on autodidacte, elle a appris \u00e0 faire des qalliniit (langue de bottes traditionnelles ou de pantouffle) et elle utilise maintenant la m\u00eame technique pour ses boucles d\u2019oreilles. Elle utilise maintenant des outils m\u00e9caniques, ce qui est plus efficace. S\u2019inspirant et prenant les conseils des autres, elle a appris \u00e0 graver et a fait des choses uniques avec des mat\u00e9riaux diff\u00e9rents. \nComme bien des artistes \u00e0 multiples talents, Phebe a toujours de la difficult\u00e9 \u00e0 se proclamer artiste : \u00ab C\u2019est comme si j\u2019avais le syndrome de l\u2019imposteur. Je suis une personne cr\u00e9ative avec mes mains, j\u2019aime cr\u00e9er c\u2019est tout. \u00bb Son petit mot de fin: \u00ab Tu peux faire ce que tu veux, essayer de nouvelles choses, c\u2019est correct de se tromper. Nous sommes souvent notre propre obstacle. \u00bb\n\n\n\n

Originally from Kangirsuk, Phebe Bentley is a seamstress, artist, jewelry maker and a writer. She is also the Director of Post-secondary Student Services at Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (KI).
\nGrowing up Phebe moved a few times. She lived in Montreal while her mother, Lolly Annahatak, was studying at McGill University, and in Kuujjuaq as her father, Peter Bentley, was the principal of Jaanimmarik School, where she studied and graduated.
\nHer first published writing experience was during her time at Jaanimmarik. She wrote a short story for a contest under a penname, which her dad helped her to choose, and he encouraged her to submit her story. It was a very local publication, so the young girl was shy to use her real name, but for Phebe writing has always been a passion: \u201cThe way I speak and the way I write are different. I don\u2019t really search for words, but I like to sit with an idea or piece of writing to allow the words to come to me, so I can express myself clearly and do justice to the piece.\u201d
\nInuit Art Quarterly reached out to her for the first time in 2021. They asked her to do an article for their online publication on an art piece which did not have much exposure. She accepted the assignment and chose a carving that her mother owns. In her research she discovered that a relative had made it, Johnny Inukpuk. She is writing for IAQ ever since. Her latest profile was on a print by Inupiaq artist Sarah Ayaqi Whalen Lunn. Phebe chose that art piece because it resonated with her. At first glance we see a woman hung upside down, held by threads attached to a uterus, her eyes covered, and her hair loosened. \u201cThere was so many angles to bring up from this drawing. I could have written so much, but I was given a word limit.\u201d It was a very emotional process. Phebe mingled proficiently in between her personal life and the politics around the art piece, a mix of rage towards the American politics going on and the world slowly following the path. The profile allowed her to reflect on issues affecting women and especially young Inuit women and their ability to consent, as well as the ongoing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls crisis. \u201cRight away I knew what to write\u201d Phebe said. She hoped the profile could bring justice and awareness to these problems as more and more basic human rights are stripped away gradually. The conversation was too pressing and relevant to stay silent, even with the potential for some backlash: \u201cBeing able to talk about it, about taboo things is important.\u201d
\nNot only does Phebe have a facile pen, she also makes jewelry. It was right before the infamous pandemic; she was camping in Kangirsuk with her aunt. The seamstress-writer picked up some antlers and ivory off the land. She started to cut them up with a handsaw, and it started with simpler tools. She learned independently how to make qalliniit (tongue of traditional boots, or slippers) and now uses that technic for earrings. Now she has power tools, which are more efficient. Taking inspiration and guidance from others, she taught herself to engrave and did unique things with different materials. She now has her own brand: lookinsharpbyphebe.
\nLike many multitalented artists, Phebe is having a hard time labeling herself as an artist. \u201cI feel like I have the imposter syndrome. I am a creative person with my hands, I enjoy creating it\u2019s all.\u201d In conclusion, Phebe said to future writers, \u201cYou can do what you want, try things, it\u2019s ok to be wrong. We are the only thing in our own way.\u201d\n\n\n\n
