Johnny Saunders, Yaa \u00e9tant son nom de sc\u00e8ne, a grandi \u00e0 Kuujjuaq o\u00f9 il vit encore aujourd\u2019hui. Dans sa jeunesse, il a fait du sport, il est souvent all\u00e9 en bateau, march\u00e9 en nature et adorait regarder les montagnes dans le ciel, et la musique a toujours fait partie de sa vie, en l\u2019\u00e9coutant du moins: \u201cC\u2019\u00e9tait une grande partie de moi, elle m\u2019a sauv\u00e9 plusieurs fois\u201d. Mais en en jouer est arriv\u00e9 plus r\u00e9cemment.
\nSes parents jouaient de la musique. Son p\u00e8re ma\u00eetrisait la guitare, pendant que sa m\u00e8re \u00e9crivait et chantait des chansons. Elle essayait d\u2019apprendre \u00e0 son fils, il l\u2019\u00e9coutait m\u00eame s\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ress\u00e9, ce qu\u2019il l\u2019aida plus tard. Tous deux l\u2019ont aid\u00e9 et encourag\u00e9 lorsqu\u2019il a finalement voulu s\u2019y int\u00e9resser. Johnny a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 composer et \u00e9crire quand il a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point la musique \u00e9tait importante dans sa vie. Il voulait au moins avoir une chanson, juste pour l\u2019exp\u00e9rience. \u00ab C\u2019est cool de partager ta propre musique, et d\u2019\u00eatre capable de dire que c\u2019est toi-m\u00eame qui l\u2019a fait \u00bb. Il explique que la guitare est un instrument simple mais difficile \u00e0 ma\u00eetriser.
\nJohnny est all\u00e9 perform\u00e9 \u00e0 Tasiujaq, Salluit, Kuujjuaq and Kuujjuaraapik juste avant de trouver des membres de groupe \u00e0 la maison.\nLe chanteur-compositeur a cr\u00e9\u00e9 un nouveau groupe il y a quelques mois : Jean-S\u00e9bastien Gravel (basiste), Benjamin Saunders (batterie) et lui (chanteur \/ guitariste). Ils ont voyag\u00e9 \u00e0 Kangirsualujjuaq en tant que groupe. Au fur et \u00e0 mesure qu\u2019ils avancent, le groupe pratique et peaufine leur technique pour s\u2019am\u00e9liorer. \u00ab Je me sens tr\u00e8s chanceux de pouvoir faire la musique entour\u00e9 de bonnes personnes \u00bb. D\u2019\u00eatre sur la sc\u00e8ne quand tu es pr\u00e9par\u00e9, c\u2019est tr\u00e8s excitant et addictif. La premi\u00e8re fois s\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e9peurant mais plaisant et les acclamations de la foule te rendent humble.
\nPour son premier album et sa premi\u00e8re fois dans un studio, tout s\u2019est pass\u00e9 rapidement. Johnny a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 dans le cadre du projet d\u2019enregistrement de musique d\u2019Aumaaggiivik, le Secr\u00e9tariat des arts du Nunavik, qui pr\u00e9voit une tourn\u00e9e d\u2019enregistrements dans des communaut\u00e9s durant l\u2019ann\u00e9e, dans l\u2019objectif de lancer des albums \u00e0 la fin de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. Le chanteur confesse qu\u2019il veut continuer \u00e0 faire de la musique autant qu\u2019il peut. Si ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas de ses amis et des encouragements de ses parents, il ne serait pas mont\u00e9 sur sc\u00e8ne. Lorsqu\u2019il performe pour eux, il sent qu\u2019il a des supers pouvoirs, et sa confiance monte en fl\u00e8che. \u00ab Je veux jouer des chansons que je peux faire devant mes parents et mes enfants. \u00bb Johnny aimerait que la musique soit pr\u00e9sente dans la vie de ses enfants comme lui il l\u2019a eue.
\nIl est le plus fier de son travail lorsque \u00e7a l\u2019aide quelqu\u2019un : amener \u00e0 continuer d\u2019aimer, aider \u00e0 apprendre ou rester fort.

Johnny Saunders, Yaa as a stage name, grew up in Kuujjuaq and still lives there to this day. He played sports as a young child, went on boat trips, walked in nature and loved watching the mountains in the sky, but he always had music in his life, listening to it at least: \u201cIt was a strong part of me, saved me many times\u201d. Playing it was more recent.
\nHis parents played music. His dad mastered guitar, while his mom wrote and sang songs and played skillful guitar. . She tried to make her son learn, but he didn\u2019t want to get much involved, although he listened, which helped him later on. Both parents pushed him and helped him when he finally got into it. Johnny started writing and composing because he saw how important the music was in his life. He wanted at least one song, for the experience of it. \u201cIt\u2019s cool to have your own song out there, and be able to say it\u2019s yourself who\u2019s done it \u201c. He also started to be able to connect better with his emotions, and found it important to express them as well. \u201cWe all feel them, but can\u2019t always express them\u201d he says.
\nJohnny got interested in the stringed instrument at the age of eight. He saw a show, Tupialuk and felt in love with the guitar right then and there, it was IT. He explains that the instrument is simple, but hard to master.
\nJohnny went to go perform in Tasiujaq, Salluit, Kuujjuaq and Kuujjuaraapik just before finding bandmates at home.
\nThe singer-composer has formed a new band few months ago: Jean-S\u00e9bastien Gravel (bassist), Benjamin Saunders (drummer) and himself (voice and guitar). They have traveled to Kangirsualujjuaq to perform as a band. As they go on, the band is still practicing and trying to be better. \u201cI feel very fortunate to enjoy making music with good people\u201d he says. To be on stage, when you\u2019re prepared and ready, it is very exciting and addictive. His first time was scary but fun and he finds the cheers from the crowd is very humbling.
\nFor his new album and his first time in a studio, everything happened fast. Johnny was selected to be part of the Music recording project led by Aumaaggiivik, Nunavik Arts Secretariat, a recording tour in various communities in the region happening this year with albums releases planned at the end of the year. The singer confessed that he wants to keep doing music as long as he can. If it weren\u2019t for his friends, he wouldn\u2019t have gone up the stage. His parents were also very encouraging. Going to them, he feels like he has super powers, and they skyrocket his confidence. \u201cI want to sing songs that I can sing in front of my parents and children.\u201d Johnny would like for his children to have music in their lives like he did.
\nHe is most proud of his work when it helps anyone, to keep loving, help learning and being strong.
