Annie Hickey Kenuajuak est une artiste de perlage, ainsi qu’une charpenti\u00e8re de m\u00e9tier.
\nAnnie Kenuajuak a appris le m\u00e9tier de charpenti\u00e8re \u00e0 Inukjuak au Centre de formation professionnel Nunavimmi Pigiursavik. Elle se souvient de son parcours et explique comment elle a appris \u00e0 utiliser les bons outils et les techniques enseign\u00e9es tout au long de la formation. \u00ab Je voulais faire de la charpenterie parce que je voulais construire ma propre maison \u00bb.
\nAu cours de son parcours, Kenuajuak souhaitait cr\u00e9er des \u0153uvres inspir\u00e9es de son identit\u00e9; elle voulait cr\u00e9er des \u0153uvres traditionnelles en fonction de ses int\u00e9r\u00eats. Au moment o\u00f9 elle acquiert de nouvelles connaissances et les ajoutes \u00e0 sa bo\u00eete \u00e0 outils, elle prend conscience du manque de repr\u00e9sentativit\u00e9 des Inuit dans les jouets pour enfants dans les magasins. Voyant cela, elle s\u2019est rendue \u00e0 son atelier et a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 cr\u00e9er sa maison de poup\u00e9e iconique, un duplex \u00e0 quatre chambres dans le style des architectures du Nunavik. Elle partage \u00e9galement son int\u00e9r\u00eat envers l\u2019artisanat traditionnel, allant des appliqu\u00e9s muraux et des tra\u00eeneaux \u00e0 chiens aux jouets pour enfants (syllabiques en pi\u00e8ces de bois, maisons de poup\u00e9es et lunettes de neige).
\nEn plus de son travail du bois, Kenuajuak cr\u00e9e des bijoux perl\u00e9s. Elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 perler alors qu’elle entreprenait son parcours professionnel en 2014, lorsqu\u2019elle se rend compte qu’elle a beaucoup de temps libre entre ses cours. Elle a pris son aiguille et a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 fabriquer des colliers. Au fil des ann\u00e9es, elle a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 sa vision unique, cr\u00e9ant des colliers et des broderies. Kenuajuak a \u00e9galement anim\u00e9 des ateliers de type open space o\u00f9 les gens peuvent cr\u00e9er dans un espace inclusif et ouvert, et o\u00f9 ils peuvent concevoir des perlages qui refl\u00e8tent leur personnalit\u00e9.\n
\nReconnaissant la libert\u00e9 que la cr\u00e9ation lui procure, elle r\u00e9alise que celle-ci a eu un impact positif sur son mode de vie : \u00ab Cela m’a permis de rester sobre, d’\u00e9viter les ennuis, d’\u00eatre occup\u00e9e et productive. Je pouvais vendre mes \u0153uvres. \u00bb
\nKenuajuaq a d\u00e9couvert sa communaut\u00e9 de perlage en ligne : \u00ab \u00c7a a juste explos\u00e9, tout le monde perlait ! \u00c7a m\u2019a ouvert une multitude de portes \u00bb Au cours de sa carri\u00e8re de cr\u00e9atrice, elle prend conscience qu\u2019elle fait un r\u00e9el effort pour d\u00e9velopper ses comp\u00e9tences, que ce soit durant ces temps libres lors de la pand\u00e9mie, entre ses classes ou lorsqu\u2019elle prend conscience de la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et du succ\u00e8s de ses pairs. \u00ab Quand j\u2019ai une id\u00e9e, il faut que \u00e7a sorte, je ne peux plus faire autre chose, je dois compl\u00e9ter mon projet. \u00c7a part d\u2019une petite perle et \u00e7a explose ! \u00bb
\nAvec le temps, Kenuajuaq s\u2019est retrouv\u00e9e avec ses \u0153uvres et ses diff\u00e9rents projets dans sa maison. Cela lui fait penser \u00e0 son oncle, le sculpteur Lucassie Kenuajuak. \u00c0 chacune de ses visites, elle pensait toujours trouver plusieurs de ses \u0153uvres chez lui mais ce n\u2019\u00e9tait pas le cas. Plus elle y r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi, plus elle fait le lien avec l\u2019id\u00e9e que la survie est ce qui motive son travail, comme ce l\u2019\u00e9tait pour son oncle. Tout ce qui est cr\u00e9\u00e9 est dans le but d\u2019obtenir une certaine prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 : \u00ab Je cr\u00e9e pour vendre, c\u2019est une question de survie \u00bb..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annie Hickey Kenuajuak is an artist, producing beadwork, as well as a being a carpenter by trade.
\nAnnie Kenuajuak learnt her trade in carpentry by vocational training at Nunavimmi Pigiursavik in Inukjuak. Kenuajuak reminisced her training path, speaking on how she learnt how to use the proper tools and techniques taught throughout the course. \u201cI wanted to do carpentry because I wanted to build my own house.\u201d
\nDuring her training as a carpenter, Kenuajuak yearned to create art that was relevant to her identity; she wanted to create traditional pieces based on her interests. As she learnt the various skills and adding them to her tool belt, Kenuajuak recognized the lack of representation of Inuit children\u2019s toys from the store. Seeing this, she went to her workshop and started using her handicrafts to build her iconic dollhouse stylized in 4-bedroom duplex. Drawing direct inspiration from the architectural styles of Nunavik houses. She also speaks about her interest in developing skills on traditional crafts ranging from wall hangings, dog sleds to children\u2019s toys (syllabic name boards, doll houses, and snow goggles).
\nIn addition to her woodwork, Kenuajuak also creates beaded necklaces. Her beadwork came as she was taking her vocational training in 2014, noticing the amount of free time she had in-between classes. She picked up the needle and started making necklaces. Through the years she developed her unique vision, creating necklaces and embroideries. Kenuajuak had also facilitated workshops in the spirit of an open space where people can create in a safe and inclusive space; where they can create beadwork that reflects their own personality.
\nRecognizing the freedom that creation brings her; she realized that this freedom also sustained her lifestyle in a positive way: \u201cIt kept me sober, kept me out of trouble, and it kept me busy and productive. I was able to sell my work.\u201d
\nKenuajuak found her beading community online: \u201cIt just boomed and everyone was doing it. It opened a lot of doors.\u201d Throughout Kenuajuak\u2019s creative career, she realized that she really strives to develop her skills further, whether in any free time during the pandemic, in between classes or when recognizing the creativity and success of bead workers in her circle. \u201cWhen I have an idea, it has to come out, I can\u2019t do anything else; the project must be done. It starts like a small bead and then it explodes like that.\u201d
\nAs time passes Kenuajuak find herself surrounded by her artwork and her various projects in her home. This makes her think of her uncle Lucassie Kenuajuak, who was a caver himself. When she visited her uncle, she thought she would find many of his carvings in his home but this was not the case. The more she thinks about this the more she reflects on how survival is what lies behind her work, as well as it did for her uncle. Everything that is created is for the purpose of obtaining some kind of prosperity. \u201cIts survival\u2026 I\u2019m working to sell.\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n
