Saali Kuata a grandi \u00e0 Kuujjuaq et en 2015, il a quitt\u00e9 pour Montr\u00e9al afin de poursuivre ses \u00e9tudes. La m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, il r\u00e9alise les ressources pour les arts que lui offre la ville et il commence \u00e0 explorer son c\u00f4t\u00e9 artistique. Il avance dans sa pratique du cirque, poursuit avec la photographie et se lance dans la sculpture. Saali explique que chaque pratique a un effet m\u00e9ditatif diff\u00e9rent, mais qu’au final, elles reviennent toutes \u00e0 l’esprit.
Saali a d\u00e9couvert le cirque gr\u00e2ce au programme de cirque social Cirqiniq<\/em> en 2013. Il a essay\u00e9 un atelier et s’est laiss\u00e9 s\u00e9duire. En 2019, il cofonde Tupiq A.C.T<\/em>., une organisation \u00e0 but non lucratif qui utilise le cirque comme moyen d’explorer et de promouvoir la culture et les traditions inuit. Il a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 trois productions : Unikkaaqtuat<\/em>, Tupituqaq<\/em> et Riopelle Grandeur Nature<\/em>. Unikkaaqtuat,<\/em> produit par Les 7 doigts, Artcirq et Taqqut Productions<\/em> en 2018-2020, lui tient particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 c\u0153ur, car il lui a ouvert les yeux sur la richesse des histoires inuit racont\u00e9es \u00e0 travers le cirque et sur la satisfaction qu’il en retire apr\u00e8s le dur labeur qu’il y a consacr\u00e9. Tupituqaq<\/em> est une cr\u00e9ation de Tupiq A.C.T.<\/em>, le spectacle pr\u00e9sente les liens interg\u00e9n\u00e9rationnels qui existent dans la narration d’histoires; il suit une jeune femme qui recherche ses grands-m\u00e8res et rencontre au cours de son voyage de grands et puissants esprits de la terre.
Il fait actuellement partie de la production Riopelle Grandeur Nature aux 7 doigts<\/em>. Un d\u00e9fi unique pour se rapprocher de l’artiste qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois renomm\u00e9, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 fortement influenc\u00e9 par ses voyages dans le Nord, en particulier dans les s\u00e9ries Jeux de Ficelle et Iceberg<\/em>. Il existe peu d’informations sur les endroits o\u00f9 il s’est rendu et sur les personnes qu’il a rencontr\u00e9es. Il \u00e9tait donc difficile pour l’artiste inuk d’explorer cet h\u00e9ritage aujourd’hui, mais \u00e0 travers l\u2019angle du lien au territoire, il performe un num\u00e9ro de corde solo qui se distingue dans le spectacle. Le jeune acrobate explique qu’il aime son exp\u00e9rience pour plusieurs raisons : “J’aime \u00eatre sur sc\u00e8ne, la quantit\u00e9 d’efforts, le courage, cela donne un sentiment de fiert\u00e9. Je suis heureux de partager le dur labeur, de voir mes coll\u00e8gues performer et le soutien que nous avons en tant qu’\u00e9quipe.” Pour cet \u00e9v\u00e9nement, Saali a \u00e9galement jou\u00e9 le r\u00f4le de commissaire pour l\u2019espace Inuit Qilanga dans l’exposition qui accompagne le spectacle.
Non seulement il est capable de s\u2019exprimer avec son corps, mais il peut aussi captiver des moments de paix avec son appareil photo. Il aime prendre des photos de Kuujjuaq, de la nature, du paysage, car cela lui procure un sentiment de nostalgie. Autodidacte, il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 16 ans. Son p\u00e8re aimait \u00e9galement la photographie et l’aidait. L’un des souvenirs que Saali garde de lui est celui o\u00f9, curieux, il fouillait dans son mat\u00e9riel photographique analogique et son p\u00e8re lui a dit : “Tu as trouv\u00e9 mon appareil photo !” en souriant. Il a \u00e9galement acquis beaucoup de connaissances et d’inspiration aupr\u00e8s d’une de ses amies, Mary Ruston, qui lui a achet\u00e9 son premier appareil photo.
Pour la sculpture, il s’agit d’une rencontre impr\u00e9vue, en 2021. Alors qu’il se promenait dans un parc qu’il fr\u00e9quente habituellement, on lui a demand\u00e9 d’animer un atelier de sculpture de pierre \u00e0 savon. Il n’avait jamais eu d’exp\u00e9rience auparavant, mais ceci lui est venu le plus naturellement du monde. Il s’est lanc\u00e9 dans l’aventure et depuis, il est passionn\u00e9, car le geste de travailler la pierre \u00e0 savon procure une grande tranquillit\u00e9 d’esprit.

Saali Kuata grew up in Kuujjuaq, and in 2015 he went to Montreal for college. That same year, he started to explore his artistic side since living in the city proved to have more resources for the arts. He explored in circus, continued with photography and landed on carving. Saali says each practice have a different type of meditating affects, although they all come back to the mind in the end.
The way Saali found out about circus was through the social circus program Cirqiniq<\/em> in 2013. There was a circus workshop that he tried and got hooked. He now practices as an aerialist, and an acrobat and in 2019, co-founded Tupiq A.C.T.<\/em>, a non-profit organization that uses circus as a mean to explore and promote inuit culture and traditions. He\u2019s been in three productions: Unikkaaqtuat<\/em>, Tupituqaq<\/em> and Riopelle Grandeur Nature<\/em>. Unikkaaqtuat<\/em> produced by Les 7 doigts, Artcirq, & Taqqut Productions<\/em> in 2018-2020, is special to his heart, because it opened his eyes to the richness of Inuit story telling through circus and the fulfilling satisfaction it brought him after the hard work they\u2019ve put in it. Tupituqaq <\/em>is a Tupiq A.C.T. <\/em>creation, the show presents the intergenerational connections that lay in story telling; following a young woman who search\u2019s for her grandmothers and on her journey encounters with great and powerful spirits of the land.
He is currently part of the show Riopelle Grandeur Nature at Les 7 doigts<\/em>, a unique challenge to connect with the renown Quebec artist who was strongly influenced by his trips up North, specifically in the Jeux de Ficelle and Iceberg series<\/em>. There is few information on where he went and who he met so it was challenging for the inuk artist to explore this heritage today but through the lens of the relation with the landscape the solo cord number stands out in the show. The young acrobat says that he likes his experience for several reasons: \u201cI enjoy being on stage, the amount of effort, courage, it gives a sense of pride. I\u2019m happy to share the hard work, and to watch my colleagues perform and the support we have as a team.\u201d For this event Saali also played the role of a curator for Inuit Qilanga in the exhibition that goes along with the show. Not only is he capable of expressing what he needs through his body, but he can also captivate moments of peace with his camera. He loves taking pictures of Kuujjuaq, the nature, the landscape, as it brings him nostalgia. Self-taught, he started at 16 years old. His father was also fond of photography and helped him. One of Saali\u2019s memory with him was when he got curious and went through his analogue camera equipment, and said: \u201cYou found my camera!\u201d with a smile. He also gained a lot of knowledge & inspiration from one of his friend Mary Ruston, who bought him his first camera.
For carving, it was a coincidental encounter, in 2021. He was walking in a park he usually goes to and got asked to facilitate a soapstone carving workshop. He never had experience before that, so it came as naturally as it could. He explored it and ever since, Saali developed a passion; as it creates a peace of mind whilst carving.
