Originaire de Kangiqsualujjuaq o\u00f9 elle a v\u00e9cu les premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de sa vie, Kathy Aputiarjuk est maintenant \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al pour poursuivre ses \u00e9tudes. Elle \u00e9tudie la musique professionnelle et les techniques de chant au Coll\u00e8ge Vanier. Elle a grandi avec des parents musiciens; ils avaient l’habitude d’aller chez sa tante o\u00f9 elle et sa m\u00e8re chantaient tandis que son oncle jouait de la guitare. Kathy a voulu commencer \u00e0 apprendre \u00e0 la guitare pour pouvoir jouer avec eux et participer aux r\u00e9jouissances. Quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard, elle ma\u00eetrise la guitare, le piano, le ukul\u00e9l\u00e9 et l’accord\u00e9on, qu’elle a appris seule avec l’aide d’Internet. Elle a un carnet qui la suit partout, o\u00f9 elle note les chansons qu’elle aime, et celles-ci sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e9crites en inuktitut. Elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 pratiquer le chant de gorge en 2019, lors du d\u00e9part d’une exp\u00e9dition qui a chang\u00e9 sa vie, appel\u00e9e “Student on Ice”<\/a>, et elle a progressivement appris d’autres chansons au fil des ans. Elle a donn\u00e9 un concert, avec sa partenaire de chant de gorge Annie Gordon, \u00e0 La Nuit d’Afrique \u00e0 l’\u00e9t\u00e9 2023, apr\u00e8s avoir pratiqu\u00e9es ensemble durant leurs \u00e9tudes au programme Nunavik Sivunitsavut. Lived in Kangiqsualujjuaq her early years of her life, she now studies in Montreal furthering her education. Kathy Aputiarjuk goes to Vanier College as a Professional Music and Song Techniques student. She grew up with musical parents, they used to go to her aunt\u2019s place where the hostess and Kathy\u2019s mother would sing while the aunt\u2019s husband would play the guitar. Kathy started to learn to play the guitar to be able to jam with them and be part of the fun. Years later, she now plays the guitar, piano, ukulele and accordion, which she taught herself with the help from the internet. She has a notebook that follows her around, where she keeps songs that she likes, and the songs usually are written in Inuktitut. She also started throat singing in 2019, while departing a life altering expedition, called the Student on Ice<\/a> and she has gradually learned more songs throughout the years. Apprendre ce que l’on aime s’accompagne de d\u00e9fis et de sacrifices. Lorsqu’elle suivait le programme Nunavik Sivunitsavut, les dates limites pour les demandes d’admission au coll\u00e8ge approchaient. On lui a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 de s’inscrire au programme de musique du Coll\u00e8ge Vanier, \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 qu’elle \u00e9tait musicienne amateure. Kathy n’\u00e9tait pas s\u00fbre d’\u00eatre accept\u00e9e, mais elle a tout de m\u00eame pos\u00e9 sa candidature, ayant toutefois le Coll\u00e8ge John Abbott pour deuxi\u00e8me choix. Pour pouvoir \u00eatre accept\u00e9e au Coll\u00e8ge, elle avait trois \u00e9tapes \u00e0 franchir : un test auditif, un test th\u00e9orique et une audition pour chanter deux chansons pop classiques. Apr\u00e8s avoir tout termin\u00e9, elle \u00e9tait certaine d\u2019avoir \u00e9chou\u00e9 le test th\u00e9orique, mais confiante des deux autres. Ainsi, les deux professeurs de chant lui ont dit de suivre le cours d’\u00e9t\u00e9 afin d\u2019\u00eatre accept\u00e9e. Elle a h\u00e9sit\u00e9 \u00e0 suivre le cours d’\u00e9t\u00e9 parce qu’elle voulait rentrer chez elle pour \u00eatre avec sa famille, mais au premier mois de l’\u00e9t\u00e9, elle s\u2019est d\u00e9cid\u00e9e \u00e0 aller \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et a r\u00e9ussi le test d’\u00e9valuation cette fois-ci. Elle a encore h\u00e9sit\u00e9 \u00e0 revenir au d\u00e9but du semestre en pensant qu’elle serait \u00e0 nouveau loin de chez elle, ce qui l’effrayait, mais elle savait qu’elle devait revenir. “Maintenant que je suis ici, ma voix s’am\u00e9liore”, dit-elle.
Elle adore le programme, am\u00e9liorant sa formation auditive et la th\u00e9orie musicale, m\u00eame si elle s\u2019ennuie parfois de chez elle. Cela lui a ouvert les yeux, cela repr\u00e9sente beaucoup de choses \u00e0 g\u00e9rer de temps en temps, alors elle fait une pause dans l’\u00e9criture de chansons et verra ce qu’elle ressent \u00e0 l’id\u00e9e de continuer apr\u00e8s la fin du premier semestre. Elle a trouv\u00e9 cela difficile au d\u00e9but, parce qu’elle est pass\u00e9e de la vie de famille \u00e0 vivre seule, mais elle dit que l’exp\u00e9rience l’aide \u00e0 acqu\u00e9rir de l’ind\u00e9pendance.
Kathy \u00e9crit lentement ses propres chansons; en attendant, elle chante des reprises et collabore avec d’autres Inuit. Elle a collabor\u00e9 avec le groupe Qimutjuit, a jou\u00e9e avec Willis Tagoona \u00e0 la batterie une autre fois, Joshua Haulli, Johnny Saunders, Juurini et Inuqatigiit entre autres. Elle aime chanter avec d’autres artistes sur sc\u00e8ne et aimerait continuer \u00e0 le faire \u00e0 l’avenir. Son astuce pour \u00e9crire des chansons est de le faire quand il y a beaucoup d’\u00e9motions qui d\u00e9bordent, “vous devez ressentir vos sentiments, c’est le truc”, de cette fa\u00e7on la chanson se cr\u00e9e facilement, a-t-elle ajout\u00e9.
La jeune artiste a r\u00e9cemment \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9e \u00e0 participer \u00e0 la chanson th\u00e8me d\u2019Isuarsivik, dirig\u00e9e par Beatrice Deer, plus excitant encore, elle travaille sur un EP (extended play), avec son producteur, le batteur de Beatrice Deer, Mark Wheaton. Learning what you love comes with challenges as well as sacrifices. When she was at Nunavik Sivunitsavut Program, and the deadlines for college applications neared. She got a suggestion to go to Vanier College in the music program considering that she was an amateur musician. Kathy wasn\u2019t sure she would be accepted but she applied anyway, and she also had John Abbott College in mind as a backup. To be able to go into the college, she had 3 steps to do: Ear training test, theory test and an audition to sing two classical pop songs. After finishing everything, she was sure she wouldn\u2019t pass the theory test, but she felt decent about the other two, then got told to do the summer course by the two voice teachers. She hesitated to do the summer course because she wanted to go back home to be with family, but into the first month of summer, she still went to Montreal and passed the summer evaluation test this time. She hesitated yet again on coming back at the beginning of the semester thinking of being away from home all over again which dreaded her, but she knew that she had to come back. \u201cNow I\u2019m here and my voice has been improving\u201d she says.
She is loving the program, bettering her ear training and theory side of music even though she gets a little home sick sometimes. It has opened her eyes, though it is a lot to handle from time to time, so she is taking a break on songwriting and will see how she feels about continuing after the first semester ends. She found it difficult at first, because she went from being with a family of four people in a house to living alone, but she says the experience helped her built independence.
Kathy is slowly writing her own songs; in the meantime, she sings covers and collaborate with other Inuit. She has collaborated with the Qimutjuit band, had Willis Tagoona on the drums another time, Joshua Haulli, Johnny Saunders, Juurini, and Inuqatigiit as she remembers. She enjoys singing with other artists on stage and would like to continue doing so in the future. Her trick for writing songs is to do it when there\u2019s a lot of emotions overflowing, \u201cyou got to feel your feelings, that\u2019s the trick,\u201d that way the song easily creates itself she added. The young artist was recently invited to be part of the Isuarsivik Anthem song that was led by Beatrice Deer and what\u2019s even more exciting is that she is working on an EP (extended play), with her producer, Beatrice Deer\u2019s drummer, Mark Wheaton.
