Qimutjuit est un groupe de quatre personnes, Charlie Iqaluk, Eric Atagotaaluk, Pauloosie Kasudluak et Jobie Oweetaluktuk. Ils viennent tous du m\u00eame village, Inukjuak. Gr\u00e2ce au fonds de l’initiative “Bright Futures”, ils ont pu former Qimutjuit, et c’est ainsi qu’ils jouent depuis 1990, soit depuis 33 ans. Au d\u00e9but, ils ne jouaient que du clavier, mais depuis qu’ils ont d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de jouer plus s\u00e9rieusement, ils ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 apprendre de nouveaux instruments, comme la basse et la guitare. Ils ont d\u00fb choisir un chanteur principal, qui s’est av\u00e9r\u00e9 \u00eatre Charlie. Ensuite, Paul a appris \u00e0 jouer de la basse et \u00c9ric a appris la guitare. Ils ont continu\u00e9 \u00e0 changer d’instrument, mais c’est lorsqu’ils ont enregistr\u00e9 le premier album qu’ils se sont concentr\u00e9s sur un seul instrument.
Leur premier voyage a eu lieu \u00e0 Puvirnituq, en 1991. \u00c0 l’\u00e9poque, ils \u00e9taient encore inexp\u00e9riment\u00e9s et en phase d’apprentissage de la musique. Ils ont expliqu\u00e9 qu’ils \u00e9taient tr\u00e8s stress\u00e9s et nerveux \u00e0 l’id\u00e9e de jouer, parce que la foule \u00e9tait pleine et qu’ils jouaient juste apr\u00e8s un groupe assez populaire. \u00c0 leur grande surprise, les gens ont beaucoup aim\u00e9 leur musique, ce qui les a motiv\u00e9s \u00e0 continuer.
Ils ont particip\u00e9 \u00e0 tous les festivals de musique au Nunavik, et \u00e0 certains festivals au Nunavut, ainsi qu’\u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et \u00e0 Ottawa. Ils n’ont enregistr\u00e9 qu’un seul album, car Charlie a travaill\u00e9 dans les mines de Raglan pendant 17 ans. Ils n’ont donc pas eu le temps d’enregistrer des chansons, et les autres membres s\u2019occupaient de leur vie personnelle. Maintenant ils se r\u00e9unissent plus souvent, en essayant de trouver des moments libres et un endroit pour jouer.
A l’\u00e9poque, ils s’entra\u00eenaient tous les jours et les parents de Paul les laissaient s’entra\u00eener dans leur cabanon. Ils aimaient tellement cela qu’ils s’entra\u00eenaient apr\u00e8s minuit : “Apr\u00e8s minuit, l’\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 \u00e9tait coup\u00e9e, je suppose que nous \u00e9tions trop bruyants”, dit \u00c9ric. Paul a \u00e9galement admis qu’il \u00e9tait parfois g\u00ean\u00e9, lorsqu’il devait faire des solos avec sa guitare et qu’il oubliait o\u00f9 placer ses doigts. Charlie a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 jouer de la guitare \u00e0 l’\u00e2ge de 12 ans, avec la guitare acoustique de son fr\u00e8re, en se faufilant dans sa chambre. Un de ses cousins l’a \u00e9galement aid\u00e9, en lui montrant comment jouer des chansons de No\u00ebl dansantes. Tous ne savent pas lire la musique, ils apprennent en \u00e9coutant d’autres musiques. Ils apprennent encore, mais avec beaucoup plus d’exp\u00e9rience. Pendant que Charlie \u00e9tait \u00e0 Raglan, \u00c9ric a pratiqu\u00e9 un peu plus la guitare et Paul a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 apprendre \u00e0 jouer de l’accord\u00e9on, et a d\u00e9j\u00e0 donn\u00e9 quelques concerts dans tout le Nunavik. M\u00eame apr\u00e8s une longue p\u00e9riode d’absence, le fait qu’ils soient de nouveau ensemble leur semble tout \u00e0 fait naturel.
Qimutjuit envisage maintenant de faire un deuxi\u00e8me album, incluant des chansons qu’ils ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9crites, mais qu’ils n’ont pas encore enregistr\u00e9es. Nous pouvons dire sans crainte qu’ils sont toujours aussi forts apr\u00e8s 33 ans. At the begging, they only knew how to play the keyboard, but since they decided to get serious, they started to learn new instruments, like the base and the guitar. They had to choose a main singer, which ended up being Charlie. Then Paul learnt the base and Eric learnt the guitar. They kept switching instruments, but it is when they recorded the first album that they focused on one instrument each.
Their first travel was in Puvirnituq, in 1991. They were still immature and learning in terms of music at the time. They explained that they were very much stressed and nervous to play, because the crowd was full and they were playing right after a very famous band. To their surprise, the people loved them a lot, which helped them get motivation to continue.
They\u2019ve been to every music festivals in Nunavik, and some in Nunavut, as well as Montreal and Ottawa. They only recorded one album, due to the fact that Charlie went working in the Raglan Mines, for about 17 years. They had no time to record, and the other members started to settle their own life, but now they are starting to get back together, trying to find free times and a place for it to happen.
Back in the days, they would practice every day and Paul\u2019s parents let them practice in their shack. They liked it so much that they practiced after midnight: \u201cPast midnight, the power would be cut off, I guess we were being too loud\u201d, said Eric. Paul also admitted that he got embarrassed at times, when he had to lead with his guitar and forgot where to place his fingers. Charlie started to play the guitar at the age 12, with his brother\u2019s acoustic guitar, by sneaking in his room. One of his cousins also helped him, by showing him how to play dancing Christmas songs. All of them don\u2019t know how to read the music, they learn from listening to other music. They\u2019re still learning, but with a lot more experience. While Charlie was in Raglan, Eric practiced the guitar a little more and Paul started to learn how to play accordion, and has done few concerts already around Nunavik. Even after a long while of not meeting, them being back together just feels right.
