Nous voulions faire comme eux donc nous nous sommes mis \u00e0 apprendre de fa\u00e7on autodidacte les instruments des \u00ab Qalunaat \u00bb. William Tagoona started singing at a very early age. His father was an Anglican minister and encouraged him to sing in his Church. Then in the 60\u2019s, he joined the first ever Inuk band called \u201cThe harpoons\u201d when he went to a residential school in Churchill, Manitoba. He has not stop singing and he has been playing music ever since. He was also a drummer in the band \u201cSpectrum\u201d while living in Yellowknife and then, once he went back to Nunavik in 1974, he started to play with Tajara Papikattuk from Sugluk Band, and Mark Kadjulik who was a bass player. He used to play drum and guitar, sharing: \u201cin those years, it was different from today. We were very quite isolated because we were in the Arctic. We only had short wave radios that made us learn the music of the day back then, with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and we wanted to be like them, so we taught ourselves how to play guitar and \u201cQallunaat\u201d instruments.\u201d

C\u2019est seulement \u00e0 son retour au Nunavik qu\u2019il a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 chanter en inuktitut, sa langue maternelle : \u00ab Alors que nous \u00e9tions \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole r\u00e9sidentielle, ils essayaient de nous enlever notre langue donc nous devions chanter en anglais. Lorsque, dans les ann\u00e9es 70, nous avons pris conscience de nos droits et avons commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 nous d\u00e9fendre, on a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9crire en inuktitut. \u00bb C\u2019est l\u2019appr\u00e9ciation de son peuple qui, 50 ans plus tard, lui donne toujours le go\u00fbt de continuer : \u00ab \u00e7a n\u2019a jamais \u00e9t\u00e9 une question d\u2019argent, \u00e7a a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u2019id\u00e9e de prendre notre place et nous \u00e9panouir, nous les Inuit. Si vous \u00e9coutez bien mes chansons et celles de plusieurs musiciens comme Charlie Adams, elles parlent de notre histoire. \u00bb Il ajoute que la musique t\u00e9moigne de son \u00e9poque et peu enseigner \u00e0 la jeune g\u00e9n\u00e9ration ce que notre peuple a travers\u00e9. Alors que les gouvernements tentaient d\u2019\u00e9radiquer notre langue, les musiciens chantaient en inuktitut au sujet des droits des Inuit, et il a le sentiment que ce combat a port\u00e9 fruit afin de maintenir l\u2019inuktitut en vie.
\u00c0 la question \u00ab pourquoi continuez-vous ? \u00bb, William Tagoona r\u00e9pond : \u00ab La musique est quelque chose que tu as en toi, une fois qu\u2019on commence il est impossible de retourner en arri\u00e8re. Ma guitare est toujours pr\u00e8s de moi dans la maison. Il y a toujours une guitare dans le salon et je pense que mes fils m\u2019ont vu en grandissant et ont aussi d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 cette passion. It is only back in Nunavik that he started to sing in his own language, Inuktitut. \u201cBefore that, in the residential schools, they were trying to take away our Inuktitut language from us so we only sang in English. Since we started to learn our rights in the 1970\u2019s, and started to speak up for ourselves, we started writing in Inuktitut.\u201d It is the appreciation of his own people that still inspires him and keeps him going after 50 years: \u201cIt was never about money, it was always about to be part of growing in our society, as Inuit. When you listen to my songs and you listen to the words of many people like Charlie Adams, they write about the history of our people.\u201d He emphasis on how important music is a testimony of its time and can teach to the Youth what our people went through. While the government were trying to eradicate and alter our language, the musicians were singing in Inuktitut talking about regaining our rights as Inuit, and he feels this combat made a change and succeed as keeping the language alive.
When ask why he continues, William Tagoona said: \u201cMusic it\u2019s something you have in you, and once you start getting into it, you never turn away from it. My guitar is always beside me in our house. I always have a guitar in the living room and I think my boys watched me while they were growing up and they picked up on it too. There are always musical instruments in our home.\u201d He added that when you record and people get a hold of it, enjoy it and tell you how much it has helped them in their lives, it becomes an inspiration to continue. He has released many albums since 1978 and performed in Alaska, Greenland, northern and southern Canada as well as at the ICC conferences multiple times to represent Canada.
