Lucassie Echalook est un sculpteur a\u00een\u00e9 de la communaut\u00e9 d\u2019Inukjuak situ\u00e9e sur la c\u00f4te ouest du Nunavik. Par ses \u0153uvres narratives, il t\u00e9moigne de l\u2019av\u00e8nement de la modernit\u00e9 chez les Inuits du Nunavik. Lucassie est connu comme un porteur de la tradition inuite ainsi, pour ses sculptures, il s\u2019inspire \u00e0 la fois du mode de vie traditionnel et des influences de la vie moderne, surtout chez les femmes qu\u2019il a pass\u00e9 beaucoup de temps \u00e0 observer. On retrouve dans son travail artistique d\u2019autres sources, tels que les contes inuits traditionnels, des connaissances sur la faune et la flore de sa r\u00e9gion ainsi que les particularit\u00e9s de sa communaut\u00e9. Ce qui distingue les \u0153uvres de Lucassie, et qui nous incite \u00e0 le partager dans le cadre de l\u2019Ann\u00e9e internationale des langues autochtones de l\u2019UNESCO, c\u2019est qu\u2019une fois ses sculptures compl\u00e9t\u00e9es, dessous, il y grave l\u2019histoire ou une description de son \u0153uvre. Durant les trente derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, ses sculptures furent largement montr\u00e9es et acquises en Am\u00e9rique du Nord, en France et en Cor\u00e9e.
\nPour Lucassie, il est important de transmettre les fa\u00e7ons de faire et les valeurs traditionnelles aux plus jeunes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations. Il dit que les outils amen\u00e9s par la modernit\u00e9 peuvent \u00eatre utiles et pratiques, tels que les outils pour la sculpture et la motoneige, mais ils ont \u00e9galement un impact n\u00e9gatif car ils entra\u00eenent la perte des connaissances traditionnelles inuites et, par cons\u00e9quent, de la langue puisque tout est domin\u00e9 par la langue anglaise. \u00c9tant unilingue inuitophone, lorsqu\u2019il est pr\u00e9sent lors d\u2019\u00e9v\u00e8nements, les personnes qui l\u2019entourent parlent en inuktitut. Il croit que c\u2019est beaucoup mieux si les jeunes utilisent la langue en tout temps car, selon lui, la beaut\u00e9 de la langue inuite est de la parler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucassie Echalook is an elder and sculptor from the community of Inukjuak, located on the West coast of Nunavik. His narrative works reflect the advent of modernity among the Inuit of Nunavik. Lucassie is known as keeper of the Inuit culture. Thus, what inspires him for his sculptures are the traditional and modern way of life; especially of women he has spent a lot of time observing. He also expresses the stories told traditionally, the knowledge of the wild life where he lived and the social life of his community. One of the peculiarities of Lucassie’s sculptures, and why we chose to show his sculptures during the UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages, is because once he finishes a work, he uses to engrave the story or a description of his work underneath. During the last thirty years, his work has been bought and shown in North America, France and Korea.
\nIt is important for him to pass on traditional ways and values to younger generations. He says that the tools brought by modernity, like skidoos and sculpting tools, can be useful but also a threat to the protection of Inuit knowledge, and consequently the language because everything is in English. Being monolingual, when he\u2019s attending events, people around him speak in Inuktitut for him. He thinks it would be better if the youth speaks it at any time because the beauty of the Inuit language is to speak it.

\nL’artiste a grav\u00e9 en syllabiques (en inuktitut) directement sur la base de l’oeuvre ses commentaires personnels : \u00ab L’ours blanc a la capacit\u00e9 de survivre n’importe o\u00f9. En \u00e9t\u00e9, il reste dans l’eau pendant de longues p\u00e9riodes parce que ses ongles le blessent lorsqu’il marche sur le sol. Il pr\u00e9f\u00e8re marcher en hiver.

This woman is carrying her baby son on her back. She can work on everything and anything, even a man\u2019s job, because she is very capable. She is making a float (avataq<\/em>) out of sealskin which she will work on in a few days. She is blowing air into the avataq<\/em>as she will use it to catch bigger game later. C\u2019est une tr\u00e8s vieille l\u00e9gende. C\u2019est \u00e0 propos d\u2019une femme appel\u00e9e Lumaaq et dans cette l\u00e9gende, son fils l\u2019enroule \u00e0 la taille dans une corde et l\u2019attache \u00e0 un b\u00e9luga qui l\u2019emporte. Donc, Lumaaq se met \u00e0 suivre les b\u00e9lugas qui sont rest\u00e9s b\u00e9lugas pendant longtemps. Ils pouvaient \u00eatre vus partout et se sont \u00e9ventuellement fait appeler les Lumaaqs. C\u2019est pour cette raison que cette femme se fait appeler Lumaaq. C\u2019est ce que repr\u00e9sente cette sculpture : une l\u00e9gende appel\u00e9e Lumaaq.

This is a very old legend. It is about a woman called Lumaaq, where her son took a rope and tied her waist to a beluga and the whale dragged her away. So, Lumaaq ended up following belugas and they stayed belugas for a very long time. They would be seen everywhere and eventually got named the Lumaaqs. That is why this woman was named Lumaaq. This man and woman are married. We were like that back then. When someone had a toothache, that tooth would be tied to a sinew thread and pulled out. Even I went through that, and I can even pull out someone\u2019s bad tooth if it was loose. That is what it means. After the bad tooth has been pulled out, the pain goes away.
