un campement dans la r\u00e9gion de Kangiqsualujjuaq qui s\u2019appelle Qirnituartuq. En 1972, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9 par la coop\u00e9rative de sa communaut\u00e9 pour se rendre \u00e0 Puvirnituq afin de suivre des cours de gravure, il ne savait pas alors que cette exp\u00e9rience allait l\u2019amener \u00e0 faire partie des pionniers de la gravure sur st\u00e9atite et du mouvement de la gravure au Nunavik au 20e si\u00e8cle. Aujourd\u2019hui cette technique, qui n\u2019est plus pratiqu\u00e9e autant qu\u2019autrefois, est devenue un h\u00e9ritage important de l\u2019art inuit. <\/br>\nTivi Etok a marqu\u00e9 l\u2019histoire en 1975 en \u00e9tant le premier graveur inuk ayant eu une exposition solo avec la publication d\u2019un catalogue de sa collection nomm\u00e9 L\u00e9gendes susurr\u00e9s \u00e0 mes oreilles s\u2019entrem\u00ealant \u00e0 mes r\u00eaves, qui lui a apport\u00e9 une reconnaissance internationale . Il a ensuite eu des expositions solos \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et \u00e0 Boston. Ses \u0153uvres sont bien connues par tous les amateurs d\u2019art inuit et font partie des collections de prestigieux mus\u00e9es comme le Royal Ontario Museum, le Metropolitan Museum of Art et le Mus\u00e9e canadien de l\u2019histoire. <\/br>\nIl raconte les histoires qu\u2019il a entendu durant son enfance qu\u2019il retransmet avec des traits humoristiques. Lors de ses d\u00e9buts artistiques, il repr\u00e9sentait des \u00e9l\u00e9ments de la vie traditionnelle nomade, notamment la chasse au caribou ainsi que le comportement animal. Un peu plus tard dans sa carri\u00e8re, il a abord\u00e9 les l\u00e9gendes du nord; les p\u00e9rip\u00e9ties de chasse qui font partie de la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 des Nunavimmiut, parsem\u00e9es de rencontres avec les Tuurngait, des esprits qui peuvent \u00eatres soit mal intentionn\u00e9s ou bienveillants. Comme il trouve important que ces r\u00e9cits soient connus et qu\u2019ils continuent \u00e0 se perp\u00e9tuer, Etok transmet ses savoirs aux plus jeunes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations. Il t\u00e9moigne de la vie traditionnelle de son enfance et de l\u2019importante transition qui s\u2019est produite dans le mode de vie des Inuit. Tivi Etok est donc un acteur important aupr\u00e8s des communaut\u00e9s inuit, d\u2019abord en raison de son savoir qu\u2019il a \u00e0 partager, mais \u00e9galement pour le r\u00f4le qu\u2019il joue en faisant rayonner le Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 l\u2019international pour la qualit\u00e9 splendide de l\u2019art inuit. Tivi Etok laisse comme h\u00e9ritage un attachement important des Nunavimmiut pour l\u2019estampe en tant que forme d\u2019expression artistique. <\/br>\nIl est aussi porteur d\u2019un message important aux artistes de la r\u00e9gion : \u00ab [un artiste] devrait avoir le d\u00e9sir de cr\u00e9er un art de qualit\u00e9 dont il peut \u00eatre fier, m\u00eame si personne d\u2019autre ne voit son \u0153uvre, m\u00eame s\u2019il ne gagne pas d\u2019argent au d\u00e9but. \u00bb Il encourage les artistes \u00e0 se d\u00e9dier \u00e0 leur art et rappelle l\u2019importance de donner la perspective des Inuit sur le monde \u00e0 travers leur art.<\/br>\nLe 6 juin, Tivi Etok deviendra membre de l\u2019Ordre des arts et des lettres du Qu\u00e9bec lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie qui aura lieu \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Cette reconnaissance vise \u00e0 honorer des personnes qui ont contribu\u00e9 de mani\u00e8re remarquable, par leur engagement et leur d\u00e9vouement, au d\u00e9veloppement, \u00e0 la promotion ou au rayonnement des arts et des lettres du Qu\u00e9bec. Pour la m\u00eame occasion, l\u2019Institut culturel Avataq publie une r\u00e9\u00e9dition du livre Le monde de Tivi Etok, une version compl\u00e8tement renouvel\u00e9e avec davantage de reproductions d\u2019\u0153uvres d\u2019art.<\/br>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background has-very-light-gray-background-color\">Tivi Etok is an artist born in 1929 in a camp in Qirnituartuq, in the Kangiqsualujjuaq region, in Nunavik. In 1972, he was delegated by his community&#8217;s cooperative to go to Puvirnituq to take engraving courses, at that time he did not know that this experience would lead him to be one of the pioneers of soapstone engraving, and of the Nunavik 20th century engraving movement. This technique, which is no longer practiced as it once was, is an important heritage of Inuit art.\nTivi Etok made history in 1975 by being the first Inuk engraver to have had a solo exhibition with the publication of a catalog of his collection called \u201cLegends whispered to my ears intertwining with my dreams\u201d, which brought him international recognition1. He then had solo exhibitions in Montreal and Boston. His works are well known to all Inuit art lovers and are part of the collections of prestigious museums such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Canadian Museum of History.<\/br>\nHe tells the stories he heard during his childhood which he retransmits with humorous features. In his artistic debut, he depicted elements of traditional nomadic life, including caribou hunting and animal behavior. A little later in his career, he tackled the legends of the north; the hunting adventures that are part of the Nunavimmiut reality, dotted with encounters with the Tuurngait, spirits that can be either ill-intentioned or benevolent. As he finds it important that these stories are known and that they continue to be perpetuated, Etok transmits his knowledge to the younger generations. He bears testimony to the traditional life of his childhood and the important transition that took place in the Inuit way of life. Tivi Etok is therefore an important player with Inuit communities, first because of the knowledge he has to share, but also for the role he plays in promoting Quebec\u2019s splendid quality of Inuit art internationally. Tivi Etok leaves as a legacy an important Nunavimmiut attachment to printmaking as a form of artistic expression.<\/br>\nHe also conveys an important message to artists in the region: &#8220;[an artist] should have the desire to create beautiful art that he can be proud of, even if no one else sees his work, even if he doesn&#8217;t make money at first\u201d. He encourages artists to dedicate themselves to their art and reminds us of the importance of giving the Inuit perspective on the world through their art.<\/br>\nTivi Etok will become member the Order of Arts and Letters of Quebec in a ceremony that will be held in Montreal on June 6. This recognition aims to honor people who have made a remarkable contribution, through their commitment and dedication, to the development, promotion or influence of the arts and letters of Quebec. For the same occasion, the Avataq Cultural Institute is publishing a re-edition of the book \u201cLe monde de Tivi Etok\u201d, a completely redesigned version with more reproductions of works of
