\nQui est Eva Saunders, me demanderiez-vous ? C’est une artiste talentueuse de Kuujjuaq qui est install\u00e9e \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al depuis quelques ann\u00e9es. Son parcours a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole, dans son cours de culture, lorsqu’elle a appris la couture ainsi que d’autres activit\u00e9s traditionnelles. Parmi ces activit\u00e9s, elle a approfondi ses connaissances sur la fabrication de mitaines, de boucles d’oreilles et d’autres v\u00eatements traditionnels port\u00e9s au Nunavik.\nEva s’est d’abord int\u00e9ress\u00e9e \u00e0 la broderie, mais son int\u00e9r\u00eat a diminu\u00e9 plus tard lorsqu’elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 observer d’autres artisans fabriquer des qalliniq (langue perl\u00e9e de pantoufle) et s’est dit que tout ce dont elle avait besoin \u00e9tait de deux aiguilles et de deux fils : l’un pour ramasser la perle et l’autre pour l’accrocher. C’est alors que sa passion et son amour pour le perlage a commenc\u00e9. Elle a partag\u00e9 qu\u2019au d\u00e9but elle sentait que ses couleurs \u00e9taient r\u00e9p\u00e9titives. Elle a alors demand\u00e9 l’aide de sa meilleure amie, Alison Mesher, qui \u00e9tait capable d\u2019assembler de belles combinaisons de couleurs qu’elle-m\u00eame n’aurait jamais imagin\u00e9es se c\u00f4toyer. Elle sortait toutes ses perles et lui demandait de rassembler au moins quatre ou cinq couleurs qu\u2019elle utilisait ensuite pour commencer ses cr\u00e9ations. Une fois que les qalliniq sont termin\u00e9s, son amie Larissa Annahatak Aitchison les ach\u00e8te pour terminer la confection de ses pantoufles.\nPour continuer \u00e0 se d\u00e9passer et \u00e0 grandir en tant qu’artiste, elle a \u00e9galement commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 cr\u00e9er des napperons en peau de phoque. Cela lui permet d’essayer elle-m\u00eame de nouvelles combinaisons de couleurs et de d\u00e9terminer si elle aime ses s\u00e9lections. Eva trouve facilement son inspiration dans sa culture et ses coll\u00e8gues artistes inuit. Une fois, elle a re\u00e7u un uluk et a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 d’en dessiner une image sur une peau de phoque qu’elle a ensuite coup\u00e9e et cousue sur une toile et l’a perl\u00e9e.
\nAfin de d\u00e9velopper son art et de le partager avec le monde, l’une des plus grandes r\u00e9ussites d’Eva a \u00e9t\u00e9 la cr\u00e9ation d’une page Instagram appel\u00e9e XBEVADX qui a rapidement gagn\u00e9 en abonn\u00e9s, o\u00f9 elle partage ses cr\u00e9ations pour que tous puissent en profiter et \u00eatre envout\u00e9s par leur beaut\u00e9 et son talent. \nWho is Eva Saunders you may ask? She is a talented artist from Kuujjuaq who has been based in Montreal for the last few years. Her journey began when she learned sewing and other traditional activities in her culture class at school. Amongst these activities she grew her knowledge on how to make traditional mittens, earrings and other clothing items traditionally worn in Nunavik.
\nEva first interest was in embroidery, but later lost it when she began to observe others making qalliniq (slipper beaded tongue) and figured out that all she needed were two needles and two threads; one to pick up the bead and the other to tack it down. This is when her passion and love for beading began. She shared that she felt her colour schemes were repetitive. then she asked for help from her best friend, Alison Mesher, who is at ease with putting beautiful colour combinations together that she would have never imagined would work well together. She would pull out all her beads and ask her to gather at least four or five colours that she would use to start her creations. Once the qalliniq are completed, her friend Larissa Annahatak Aitchison purchases them to complete the slippers she is making.
\nTo keep on challenging herself and growing as an artist, she also began to create sealskin doilies. This allows her to try using new colour combinations on her own and figure out if she likes her selections. Eva easily finds her inspiration from her culture and fellow Inuit artists. She was gifted an uluk once and decided to draw an image of it on a sealskin that she then cut and sewed onto a canvas and beaded it.
\nIn order to grow her art and share it with the world, one of Eva\u2019s greatest and successful accomplishments was the creation of an Instagram page called XBEVADX that has quickly grown in followers, where she shares her creations for all to enjoy and be hypnotized by their beauty and her talent.
