Vickie Okpik est une couturi\u00e8re originaire de Quaqtaq qui vit maintenant \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 coudre en m\u00eame temps qu’elle devenait m\u00e8re et voulait pouvoir confectionner des v\u00eatements. Elle a ensuite \u00e9t\u00e9 la premi\u00e8re Inuk \u00e0 obtenir un dipl\u00f4me en design de mode du Coll\u00e8ge LaSalle. Elle poss\u00e8de maintenant une entreprise prosp\u00e8re, Okpik Design<\/a>, qui fabrique des atigiit (parkas), des pualuk, des sacs \u00e0 main et des accessoires.Elle \u00e9tait la cr\u00e9atrice derri\u00e8re Nunavik Creations qui a maintenant cess\u00e9 ses activit\u00e9s et, \u00e0 l’\u00e9poque, elle a con\u00e7u les v\u00eatements des Jeux d’hiver de l’Arctique pour l’\u00e9quipe du Nunavik et une centaine de parkas ont ainsi \u00e9t\u00e9 confectionn\u00e9s pour les jeunes athl\u00e8tes. Ceci n’est qu’un exemple de son succ\u00e8s; un de ses bracelets en peau de phoque s\u2019est rendu dans l’espace au poignet de David St-Jacques, et elle aussi a cr\u00e9\u00e9 l\u2019arnautik rouge qu’Elisapie Isaac a port\u00e9 \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision lors des derniers Prix Polaris. Derni\u00e8rement, Vickie a con\u00e7u et cousu la robe de Mary Simons, aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de Julie Grenier qui a perl\u00e9 le col, pour son investiture en tant que nouvelle gouverneure g\u00e9n\u00e9rale du Canada.
Vickie explique comment la couture l’a aid\u00e9e: “Je peux vous dire que pendant la pand\u00e9mie, lorsque tout \u00e9tait ferm\u00e9, \u00e7a m’a vraiment aid\u00e9 parce que j’\u00e9tais surtout seule, tout le temps, sans rien faire, donc coudre vraiment \u00e7a m’a aid\u00e9.” Elle a cousu plus de 200 parkas depuis le d\u00e9but de la pand\u00e9mie ! Vickie Okpik is a seamstress from Quaqtaq and now based in Montreal. She has started sewing when she was becoming a mother and wanted to be able to make clothing. She then was the first Inuk to graduate in Fashion Design from LaSalle College. She now has a successful business, Okpik Design<\/a>, in making atigiit (parkas), pualuk, handbags and accessories.
She was the designer behind Nunavik Creations that is now closed, and at that time, she designed the Arctic Winter Games clothing for the Nunavik Team and around a hundred of parkas have been made for the young athletes. This is only one example of successful event; she also saw a seal skin bracelet that made its way to the space with David St-Jacques, and the red arnautik wore on TV by Elisapie Isaac performing at the last Polaris Prizes. Lately, Vickie designed and sewed Mary Simons\u2019 dress, alongside Julie Grenier who beaded the collar, for her inauguration as the new Governor General of Canada.
Vickie shared how sewing has helped her: \u201cI can tell you during the pandemic, everything closed down, it really did help me because I was mostly alone, all the time, with nothing to do, so sewing really helped me.\u201d She sewed more then 200 parkas since the beginning of the pandemic!
