Mary Gordon Aitchison est une artiste qui r\u00e9side \u00e0 Kuujjuaq. Elle a fait une carri\u00e8re dans le domaine de l’\u00e9ducation pendant plus de 30 ans et a pris sa retraite en 2010. Depuis, elle aime passer du temps avec ses enfants et petits-enfants.
\n\nMary a \u00e9t\u00e9 t\u00e9moin dans sa jeunesse de la transition du mode de vie nomade, o\u00f9 ils passaient l’hiver sur le territoire et rejoignaient les c\u00f4tes au printemps, \u00e0 la vie s\u00e9dentaire d\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. Elle se souvient d\u2019avoir aid\u00e9 sa m\u00e8re \u00e0 enfiler des perles pour les v\u00eatements qu’elle confectionnait pour toute la famille; \u00ab Je m’endormais en l\u2019\u00e9coutant coudre les v\u00eatements \u00bb dit-elle. Tr\u00e8s influenc\u00e9e par les v\u00eatements et les accessoires de sa jeunesse, elle a commenc\u00e9 par fabriquer des qalliniq (l\u2019empeigne de la pantoufle) et s’est mise au d\u00e9fi d’essayer quelque chose de plus gros et un peu plus difficile \u00e0 chaque fois. Elle se souvient des harnais tr\u00e8s color\u00e9s que les Inuit utilisaient pour identifier les chiens lorsqu\u2019ils voyageaient en tra\u00eeneau \u00e0 chiens. Une autre de ses inspirations est le nammagaq, un sac qu’avaient les mushers lorsqu’ils voyageaient. Elle est connue pour ses v\u00eatements et ses accessoires uniques et de bonne qualit\u00e9, tels que les bandeaux, les sacs \u00e0 main, les oreillers, les bracelets et plus encore.
\n\nMary aime aussi faire du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat au centre de r\u00e9tablissement Isuarsivik et transmettre ses connaissances avec les jeunes. D\u00e9sireuse de partager ses ressources, elle invite \u00e0 l\u2019occasion des personnes comme Akinisie Sivuarapik, Evie Mark et Sarah Baulne \u00e0 venir enseigner le chant de gorge dans sa communaut\u00e9, ainsi que David __ pour offrir des sessions de tambour. Elle trouve tr\u00e8s important de donner acc\u00e8s aux jeunes aux pratiques traditionnelles qui sont presque perdues et trouve cela tr\u00e8s gratifiant lorsque d’anciens \u00e9l\u00e8ves partagent avec elle ce qu’ils ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 ou ce sur quoi ils ont travaill\u00e9. \u00ab J\u2019aide \u00e0 organiser des cours de musique et des ateliers de cr\u00e9ation pour les jeunes. Je trouve que c’est gratifiant de les voir d\u00e9velopper de nouvelles capacit\u00e9s et de voir la fiert\u00e9 qui en d\u00e9coule, et ensuite ils se produisent au festival de musique Aqpik Jam ici \u00e0 Kuujjuaq ! \u00bb
\n\nQue ce soit pour elle ou pour sa carri\u00e8re, sa cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 lui a apport\u00e9 des valeurs qu’elle ch\u00e9rit au quotidien. Sa m\u00e8re lui a dit quand elle \u00e9tait plus jeune non seulement de vendre les cr\u00e9ations qu’elle faisait mais aussi d’en faire don de temps en temps. Par exemple, elle se sent plus heureuse lorsqu’elle fait don d’une pi\u00e8ce de ses cr\u00e9ations \u00e0 une m\u00e8re c\u00e9libataire qui a besoin de r\u00e9colter des fonds pour l’\u00e9ducation de ses enfants que lorsqu’elle les vend. Comme ses mat\u00e9riaux proviennent principalement des chasseurs, elle a le sentiment que l’histoire de ces mat\u00e9riaux reste dans ses cr\u00e9ations et pendant qu’elle les fait, elle ressent le calme ou une paix int\u00e9rieure.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Gordon Aitchison is an artist living in Kuujjuaq. She has made her career in education for over thirty years and retired in 2010. Since then, she is enjoying spending her time with her children and grandchildren.
\n\nMary has witnessed the transition of the way of life from nomad where they would spend the winter on the land and leave to the sea by spring, to today\u2019s settled life. She recalls helping her mother at threading beads for the whole family\u2019s clothes; \u201cI would fell asleep listening to her sewing clothes\u201d Mary said. Very influenced by the clothing and accessories from her youth, she started by making qalliniq (slipper tongue) and challenged herself to try something bigger and little harder every time. She remembers the colorful harnesses the Inuit used to identify dogs when they were travelling by dog sled. One of her inspirations is the nammagaq, a purse that mushers had when they were travelling. She is known for her good quality and unique clothing and accessories such as headbands, purses, pillows, bracelets and more.
\n\nMary also loves to volunteer at the Isuarsivik recovery center and transfers her knowledge with the youth. Eager to share her resources, she occasionally invites people like Akinisie Sivuarapik, Evie Mark and Sarah Baulne to come and teach throat singing in her community, as well as David __ for giving drumming sessions. She finds it very important to give access to the traditional practices that were almost lost to the youth and very rewarding when former students share with her what they have been working on and what they have created. \u2018\u2019I help by organizing music lessons and creation workshops for the youth. I feel it’s rewarding when I see them develop new abilities and see the pride that comes with that, and then they perform at the Aqpik Jam Music Festival here in Kuujjuaq!\u201d
\n\nWhether it is for her or for her career, her creativity has taught her values she cherishes daily. Her mother told her when she was younger to not only sell ger creations but to also donate them occasionally. For instance, she feels happier when she donates a piece of her creations to a single mother who needs to fundraise for her children education than when she sells them. As her materials are provided mostly by hunters, she gets the feeling that the story of the material she works with remains in her creations and while she is doing them, she feels an interior peace or calm.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
