\nCaroline et Shina Novalinga forment un duo m\u00e8re et fille de chanteuses de gorge originaires de Puvirnituq et maintenant \u00e9tablies \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Au cours de la derni\u00e8re ann\u00e9e, elles ont gagn\u00e9 en popularit\u00e9 sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux en \u00e9duquant les gens sur la culture et l\u2019histoire inuite par diff\u00e9rents moyens tels que la chanson, la nourriture traditionnelle ou en portant et fabriquant des v\u00eatements traditionnels. Caroline a appris le chant de gorge dans sa communaut\u00e9 lorsque les a\u00een\u00e9s ont demand\u00e9 que la pratique soit enseign\u00e9e aux jeunes filles. Shina, quant \u00e0 elle, a grandi en observant sa m\u00e8re : \u00ab Lorsque j\u2019allais performer, ma fille venait avec moi. Elle a ainsi commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 apprendre tr\u00e8s jeune. \u00bb raconte Caroline. Lorsque Shina \u00e9tait \u00e9tudiante au Coll\u00e8ge John Abbott, elle en a appris davantage sur l\u2019histoire des peuples Autochtones au Canada et c\u2019est \u00e0 ce moment qu\u2019elle a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 partager le chant de gorge avec ses camarades de classe afin de les sensibiliser.
\nAu d\u00e9but de la pand\u00e9mie, Caroline et Shina ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 partager des clips vid\u00e9o sur Tik Tok et depuis, elles ont gagn\u00e9 des millions d\u2019abonn\u00e9s. Tout en \u00e9duquant les gens sur la r\u00e9alit\u00e9 des Inuits, elles souhaitent aussi que les jeunes autochtones aient davantage confiance en leur identit\u00e9 : \u00ab Je veux vraiment qu\u2019ils sachent qu\u2019ils sont importants. Les Autochtones savent dans leur for int\u00e9rieur qu\u2019ils sont beaux, qu\u2019ils peuvent faire ce qu\u2019ils veulent et que leur culture, leur h\u00e9ritage, leur identit\u00e9 sont \u00e9galement belles. Ils ne devraient pas avoir peur d\u2019apprendre. \u00bb explique Shina. \u00ab Nous avons re\u00e7u beaucoup de soutien, des personnes qui sont int\u00e9ress\u00e9es car m\u00eame encore aujourd\u2019hui, peu de personnes, m\u00eame ici au Qu\u00e9bec, savent que nous existons toujours. C\u2019est aussi fascinant de d\u00e9couvrir d\u2019autres Inuits ou Autochtones sur Tik Tok et de constater nos diff\u00e9rences dans les fa\u00e7ons de parler. \nEn mars, elles lanceront leur premier album qui inclura des chants de gorge traditionnels, des po\u00e8mes d\u2019Emily Novalinga, ainsi que des pri\u00e8res en Inuktitut. Lorsque la pand\u00e9mie sera termin\u00e9e, elles souhaitent pouvoir performer dans des festivals et voyager dans d\u2019autres pays o\u00f9 les peuples ont leurs fa\u00e7ons de pratiquer les chants de gorges traditionnels.

\nCaroline and Shina Novalinga are a mother-daughter throat singer duo from Puvirnituq and now based in Montreal. During the last year, they have gained popularity through social media for educating about Inuit culture and history in all different ways such as singing, eating traditional food, or wearing and making traditional clothing. Caroline was taught how to throat sing back in her community when elders requested to teach the practice to younger women. Shina grew up watching her mother: \u201cWhen I was performing, my daughter was coming with me, she started to learn at a very young age.\u201d says Caroline. When Shina started to go to college at John Abbott, she learned more deeply about the history of indigenous peoples in Canada, and that is when she started to share throat singing with her classmates and bring awareness to them.
\nWhen the pandemic started, Caroline and Shina started sharing video clips through Tik Tok and have gained millions of followers. While educating about Inuit realities, they also want the Indigenous youth to have confidence in their identity: \u201cI really want them to know that they\u2019re important. Indigenous peoples used to know that they are beautiful and that they can do anything and that their culture, their heritage, their identity is beautiful as well, and to not be scared if they want to learn.\u201d Shina said. \u201cWe get so much support, people who are interested and learn about us because still today, not many people, even here in Quebec know that we still exist. It is also nice to see other Inuit and Indigenous people on Tik Tok. We see the difference of Inuit from other regions in how they speak, even their throat singing songs are different too.\u201d she added.
\nIn March, Caroline and Shina will release their first album including traditional throat singing songs, poems by Emily Novalinga and Inuktitut prayers. They wish to perform when the pandemic ends in festivals and to also travel to other countries where people have their own traditional throat singing practices.
