Pour ce dernier mois de l\u2019Ann\u00e9e internationale des langues autochtones de l’UNESCO, au lieu de promouvoir le travail d\u2019un artiste, nous avons d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de consacrer ces mots \u00e0 Minnie Napartuk, r\u00e9cemment d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e et qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 traductrice \u00e0 l’Institut culturel Avataq pendant 25 ans. Voici donc un hommage \u00e0 une personne qui nous a fait comprendre \u00e0 quel point le m\u00e9tier de traducteur joue un r\u00f4le important dans la diffusion de la cr\u00e9ation. Clairement, la langue et le travail d\u2019une traductrice d\u00e9montre que chaque vision du monde est n\u00e9cessaire.

\nMinnie a longtemps \u00e9t\u00e9 ma coll\u00e8gue. Nous avons \u00e9t\u00e9 voisines de bureau \u00e0 plusieurs reprises pendant environ 25 ans.
\nJe me souviens d’elle comme une personne enjou\u00e9e, qui avait le go\u00fbt de travailler avec les mots inuktitut, de les transcrire, de les traduire, de rechercher le sens des mots difficiles, r\u00e9visant \u00e0 maintes reprises des textes, et m\u00eame en enregistrant avec beaucoup de talent la narration d’une pi\u00e8ce de th\u00e9\u00e2tre radiophonique.
\nElle \u00e9tait \u00e9galement heureuse de cuisiner \u00e0 la maison de la banique \u00e0 la fa\u00e7on d\u2019Inukjuak et de la partager avec tout le personnel.
Nous avons pris pour acquis que nous pouvions simplement aller \u00e0 son bureau pour lui demander des renseignements sur les mots en inuktitut et c\u2019est lorsqu\u2019elle est tomb\u00e9e malade que nous avons r\u00e9alis\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point elle \u00e9tait pr\u00e9cieuse pour Avataq.
\nElle parlait souvent de ses enfants et de ses petits-enfants, dont elle \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s fi\u00e8re. C’est \u00e0 Inukjuak que j’ai pris la mesure de sa famille, de sa grandeur, de sa beaut\u00e9 et de son accueil.
\nSeule dans ses derniers instants, elle a certainement \u00e9t\u00e9 bien entour\u00e9e \u00e0 la toute fin et repose maintenant au Nord.

\nMinnie : la porte grande ouverte entre nos cultures, r\u00e9pondant toujours avec patience et g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 \u00e0 nos demandes toujours press\u00e9es. Non seulement rendre les sens des phrases et des mots, mais nous assurer que le ton de la langue parl\u00e9e rendait bien l’intention de l’auteur. Son exp\u00e9rience de la vie men\u00e9e sans filets protecteurs la rendait excellente pour traduire les \u00e9motions que les personnages du th\u00e9\u00e2tre exprimaient. Nous perdons, nous en sommes tr\u00e8s tristes, une alli\u00e9e essentielle pour notre travail de cr\u00e9ation. En apprenant sa disparition, nous avons ressenti une grande peine et un grand vide. Condol\u00e9ances \u00e0 sa famille, \u00e0 ses amis, \u00e0 tous et toutes ses coll\u00e8gues.

For the last month of the UNESCO Year of Indigenous Languages, instead of promoting the work of an artist, we decided to dedicate those special words to honor the work of Minnie Napartuk, Avataq translator for many years and recently passed away. This is a tribute to someone who makes us all realize the importance of translation for the dissemination of creation. Clearly, language and translator show that all the different perspectives in this world are necessary.

Minnie was my colleague for a long time; I worked a few steps away from her for 25 years or so, on and off. I remember her as a cheery person who had an appetite for processing Inuktitut words, transcribing them, translating them, searching for the meaning of difficult ones, proof-reading printed text over and over, even recording with much talent the narration of a radio-theater play.
She was also happy to make Inukjuak bannock at home and share it with all the staff. We took for granted that we could simply go to her office and have all our Inuktitut issues solved. And then when she got sick, we found out acutely how essential she was in Avataq.
She often talked of her children, and grand-children, of who she was very proud. It is in Inukjuak that I took the measure of how large was her family and how beautiful and welcoming they were.
Alone in her last moments, she was certainly well accompanied at the very end, and is resting in northern ground.

Minnie: An open door between our cultures, always answering with patience and generosity to our urgent requests. Not only giving a meaning to the sentences and the words but also to ensure that the tone of the spoken language made the intention of the writer. Her life experiences lived on her own and without a safety net, made her excellent at translating emotions from theatrical characters. Sadly, we have lost an essential ally for the work of creation. Upon learning of her passing, we felt great pain and a great emptiness. Condolences to her family, to her friends and to all her colleagues.
