Annie Grenier est une artiste multidisciplinaire qui vit et travaille \u00e0 Kuujjuaq et \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Elle s’est mise \u00e0 l’artisanat d\u00e8s son plus jeune \u00e2ge, \u00e0 Kuujjuaq. Elle a appris en observant sa m\u00e8re, Louisa Watt, confectionner toutes sortes d’objets : des sachets, des ookpiit (peluches en forme de chouette) en peau de phoque et des tukautiit (chaussons). \u00ab Quand ma m\u00e8re d\u00e9tournait le regard de son ouvrage au crochet, j\u2019en profitais pour faire quelques rangs en cachette. Elle devait les d\u00e9faire, car ils \u00e9taient vraiment maladroits. \u00bb C’est principalement sa m\u00e8re qui l’a inspir\u00e9e \u00e0 se lancer dans l’artisanat, mais d’autres personnes de son entourage, comme sa tante Daisy Saunders qui fabriquait des paniers en ivigaq, ont \u00e9galement jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le important dans son parcours artistique.
\nBien qu’Annie n’ait commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 fabriquer des paniers en ivigaq que plusieurs ann\u00e9es plus tard, c’est \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 qu’elle a pris conscience de la satisfaction que lui procurait la cr\u00e9ation de ses propres mod\u00e8les. Elle a notamment \u00e9t\u00e9 guid\u00e9e par sa mentor, l’a\u00een\u00e9e Elisapie Gunn, qui lui a enseign\u00e9 l’art de la vannerie, un savoir-faire aujourd’hui tr\u00e8s peu pratiqu\u00e9 mais qui occupait autrefois une place importante dans le mode de vie inuit. Elle a toutefois mis son activit\u00e9 artisanale entre parenth\u00e8ses pendant un certain temps, jusqu’\u00e0 ce que sa fille, Julie Grenier, commence \u00e0 cr\u00e9er ses propres \u0153uvres d’art. Annie a alors retrouv\u00e9 l’inspiration pour se remettre \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation artistique, d\u00e9montrant ainsi que l’art est un parcours jalonn\u00e9 de p\u00e9riodes de cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 intenses et de p\u00e9riodes plus calmes, mais indissociable de notre identit\u00e9. Elle travaille g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement sur ses \u0153uvres jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019elles soient achev\u00e9es ou jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que la vie l\u2019oblige \u00e0 mettre son activit\u00e9 artistique en pause.
\nAnnie pr\u00e9f\u00e8re travailler avec des mat\u00e9riaux naturels, comme le qiviut (laine de b\u0153uf musqu\u00e9) et l’ivigaq (\u00e9lyme des sables), pour r\u00e9aliser ses cr\u00e9ations artisanales. Depuis l’introduction de l’umingmak (b\u0153uf musqu\u00e9) au Nunavik dans les ann\u00e9es 1980, les Nunavimmiut l’ont progressivement int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 leurs pratiques culturelles. Ils le chassent, consomment sa viande et utilisent certaines de ses parties pour l’artisanat. Ils apprennent \u00e9galement \u00e0 fabriquer du qiviut (laine) \u00e0 partir de sa fourrure. Il s’agit d’un processus long et laborieux que d’autres artistes, notamment Christine Nakoolak et Hannah Tooktoo, sont en train de d\u00e9couvrir. Cette fabrication permettra aux artisans du Nunavik de gagner en autonomie \u2014 le prix moyen d’une pelote de qiviut au Canada est de 150 dollars \u2014 et de se d\u00e9marquer par l’originalit\u00e9 de leurs cr\u00e9ations. Annie fait partie de ces artistes talentueuses qui cr\u00e9ent de la magie \u00e0 partir de ce mat\u00e9riau. Son attachement aux mat\u00e9riaux naturels locaux se traduit \u00e9galement par l’utilisation de l’ivigaq pour fabriquer des paniers et des collections de boucles d’oreilles, perp\u00e9tuant ainsi cette tradition inuit.
\nAnnie a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement CRAFTED 2025 \u00e0 Qaumajuq (Winnipeg Art Gallery) avec la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation du Nunavik. Cette exp\u00e9rience a \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s enrichissante pour elle, car elle a vendu la plupart de ses cr\u00e9ations et le mus\u00e9e a achet\u00e9 certaines de ses \u0153uvres pour sa boutique. Annie a \u00e9galement particip\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9dition de cette ann\u00e9e du festival \u00ab KWE ! \u00c0 la rencontre des peuples autochtones \u00bb \u00e0 Qu\u00e9bec en juin, o\u00f9 elle a eu l\u2019occasion de pr\u00e9senter son savoir-faire devant un public curieux. De nombreuses personnes se sont renseign\u00e9es sur sa technique de couture \u00e0 partir de peau de b\u0153uf musqu\u00e9. Elle pr\u00e9sente souvent son travail sur ses r\u00e9seaux sociaux, notamment sur Instagram @anniewattgrenier <\/a>, et pr\u00e9voit continuer \u00e0 perfectionner son art et \u00e0 le faire d\u00e9couvrir lors d’autres \u00e9v\u00e9nements.\n\n\n\n

Annie Grenier is a multidisciplinary artist based in Kuujjuaq and Montreal. She was young in Kuujjuaq when she first started crafting. She learned through watching Louisa Watt, her mother. craft all sorts of items such as sachets, seal skin ookpiit (owl plushies) and tukautiit(slippers). \u201cWhen my mother would look away from her crocheting, I would sneak in some lines of crochet. She would have to undo them, because of how amateur they were.\u201d Annie was primarily inspired by her mother to start crafting her art, but other people that surrounded her like her aunt Daisy Saunders was also a part of Annie\u2019s growth in her art journey, who made ivigaq baskets. Although it was only years after did Annie start learning on how to make Ivigaq baskets, it was at this point that she realized how satisfying it was to be able to make your own creative designs. as well as her mentor, an elder named Elisapie Gunn, who taught her on how to make baskets, a discipline that has very few makers today but used to be important in the Inuit way of living. But she took a break from crafting for some time until her daughter. Julie Grenier. started crafting her own art pieces. Annie was inspired to return to creating art again showing that making art is a journey that could bring very intense creative periods and slower ones, but it remains part of who you are. She usually works on her art pieces until the piece is done or until her life forces her to take a break from crafting.
\nAnnie prefers to work with natural materials like qiviut (muskox wool) and ivigaq (grass basket) to craft with. Since the introduction of umingmak (muskox) in Nunavik in the 80s, Nunavimmiut has been gradually introducing it in it\u2019s cultural practices; hunting and eating the meat as well as using parts for craft and learning how to make qiviut (wool) out of it\u2019s fur. This is a long and hard process many fellow artists like Christine Nakoolak or Hannah Tooktoo are learning right now and that will give autonomy \u2013 medium cost of a skein of qiviut yarn in Canada is $150 \u2013 and uniqueness to craft makers in Nunavik. Annie is one of those talented artists that creates magic out of this material. Her attachment to local natural material also translates in her use of ivigaq for basket making and earing collections, keeping alive this Inuit tradition.
\nAnnie participated in the 2025 CRAFTED event at Qaumajuq (WAG) with the Nunavik delegation. She had a great time, sold most of her products and even the museum had bought some of her crafts available at the store. Annie also participated in this year edition of KWE! Meet with Indigenous People festival in Quebec City in June, where she had the opportunity to demonstrate her skills for a curious crowd. A lot of people were asking about her process of sewing with muskox.
