Lydia Etok est originaire de Kangiqsualujjuaq. Elle a commenc\u00e9 son parcours dans le domaine des m\u00e9tiers d’arts en participant \u00e0 un atelier de perlage \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. Apr\u00e8s avoir fabriqu\u00e9 quelques boucles d\u2019oreilles orn\u00e9es de perles, elle a organis\u00e9, entre 2014 et 2015, sa premi\u00e8re expo-vente en collaboration avec des coll\u00e8gues de Makivvik. Inspir\u00e9e par le succ\u00e8s de cette vente, elle a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 fabriquer des bijoux en peau de phoque, puis s\u2019est tourn\u00e9e vers la sculpture et la couture. Ses cr\u00e9ations sont con\u00e7ues pour que les femmes inuit soient fi\u00e8res de les porter, mais elles s\u2019adressent \u00e9galement \u00e0 un public plus large qui peut les appr\u00e9cier et les porter. Elle diffuse ainsi les valeurs traditionnelles inuit.
\n\nLydia parcourt \u00e9galement le monde avec Okto\u00e9cho, un groupe qu\u2019elle codirige avec la compositrice Katia Makdissi-Warren. Compos\u00e9 d\u2019artistes originaires des quatre coins du monde, de l\u2019\u00c9gypte \u00e0 l\u2019Argentine en passant par le Qu\u00e9bec, Okto\u00e9cho s\u2019est produit dans des \u00e9v\u00e9nements tels que l\u2019Off Festival de Jazz de Montr\u00e9al et le Festival Pr\u00e9sence autochtone. Lydia Etok, Nina Segalowitz et H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Martel interpr\u00e8tent Saimaniq, un m\u00e9lange de chant de gorge traditionnel inuit et d\u2019instruments issus de diverses cultures. Cependant, elle veille \u00e0 ce que son katatjaniq et celui de sa partenaire de chant de gorge, Nina Segalowitz, restent inchang\u00e9s. Lydia Etok estime en effet que \u00ab\u2009l\u2019art du katatjaniq est sacr\u00e9 et que son int\u00e9grit\u00e9 doit \u00eatre respect\u00e9e et prot\u00e9g\u00e9e\u2009\u00bb.
\n\nTout comme ses coll\u00e8gues interpr\u00e8tes de katatjaniq, Lydia Etok \u00e9tait initialement r\u00e9ticente \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de m\u00e9langer ce chant traditionnel \u00e0 des instruments non inuit, car elle ne savait pas si la communaut\u00e9 des chanteuses de gorge accepterait cette id\u00e9e. Elle a donc discut\u00e9 avec ses coll\u00e8gues pour s\u2019assurer de leur soutien avant de poursuivre sa collaboration avec Okto\u00e9cho. Beaucoup estiment en effet que le chant de gorge est une tradition sacr\u00e9e qui ne doit pas \u00eatre associ\u00e9e \u00e0 des instruments ext\u00e9rieurs. Pour d’autres, combiner le katatjaniq avec de la musique non inuit permet de \u00ab susciter l’int\u00e9r\u00eat des jeunes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations inuit, en \u00e9veillant leur curiosit\u00e9 et leur inspiration pour la pratique du katatjaniq \u00bb.
\n\nElle s\u2019est rendue au Nunavik en compagnie de musiciens d\u2019Okto\u00e9cho, qui visitaient la r\u00e9gion pour la premi\u00e8re fois, afin d\u2019animer des ateliers de chant de gorge pour les enfants \u00e0 Umiujaq en juin et \u00e0 Kangiqsujuaq en juillet 2025. Les artistes ont \u00e9galement propos\u00e9 des ateliers permettant aux enfants de d\u00e9couvrir divers instruments et de s\u2019initier au katatjaniq. Les enfants et les musiciens ont pass\u00e9 un excellent moment lors de ces ateliers anim\u00e9s par Etok. Elle esp\u00e8re organiser d\u2019autres ateliers \u00e0 l\u2019avenir pour transmettre son savoir et inspirer les jeunes g\u00e9n\u00e9rations.
\n\nCes derniers temps, Etok a r\u00e9duit ses activit\u00e9s de chant de gorge avec Okto\u00e9cho, car elle travaille \u00e0 temps plein. Elle participe toutefois encore \u00e0 quelques \u00e9v\u00e9nements et ateliers avec Okto\u00e9cho \u00e0 travers le monde. Elle se produira au Chili en janvier 2026, animera un atelier au centre Sanaaq en avril, se produira \u00e0 Rimouski en juillet et donnera plusieurs spectacles en Australie en septembre. Elle continue \u00e9galement de se perfectionner dans la fabrication de bijoux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lydia Etok is originally from Kangiqsualujjuaq. She started out crafting through a beading workshop in Montr\u00e9al. After the workshop, having made a couple beaded earrings, She met with her colleagues at Makivvik, pulling their ideas and networks to create the first craft sale in Makivvik sometime between 2014 and 2015. Inspired by the success of the Makivvik craft sale, she continued making jewelry out sealskin to carving then to sewing. Her pieces are for inuit women to be proud to wear but also for a broader audience to appreciate and wear as well. Thus, spreading inuit traditional values.
\n\nEtok is also traveling around the world with the group she is a Co-artistic director of, Okto\u00e9cho, led by composer Katia Makdissi-Warren. The group consisting of artists from all over the world from Egypt to Argentina to Quebec, Okto\u00e9cho has performed in venues like, Off- Festival de Jazz de Montr\u00e9al and Festival Pr\u00e9sence Autochtone. Where Lydia Etok, Nina Segalowitz and H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Martel sings Saimaniq blending traditional inuit throat-singing with instruments from all sorts of cultures. But she has made sure, that her and her throat-singing partner Nina Segalowitz\u2019s katatjaniq were unchanged as Lydia Etok believes: \u201cThe art of Katatjaniq is sacred therefore the art and integrity must be respected and protected.\u201d.
\n\nLike her peers who had experimented with katatjaniq, Etok initially felt uneasy with mixing katatjaniq with non-inuit instruments as she did not know whether the throat-singing community would accept the idea of adding katatjaniq to non-inuit music, she had spoken with her fellow throat-singers to make sure it was okay to continue with the collaboration with Okto\u00e9cho. Many believe that throat-singing is a very sacred tradition not to be mixed with any outside instruments and that throat-singing can stand on its own. some other\u2019s reason to mix katatjaniq with non-inuit music is to \u201cappeal to the younger generations of inuit, drawing curiosity and inspiration to the practice of katatjaniq.\u201d She also has gone up north to Nunavik with musicians from Okto\u00e9cho. this would be the first time being in nunavik for Okto\u00e9cho. going to Umiujaq first in June and Kangiqsujuaq in July 2025, to do some throat-singing workshops for the kids to learn how to katatjaq. As well as doing instrument workshops to teach the kids on how to play instruments and experiment with the instruments and the art of katatjaniq. Etok, the kids and musicians had a great time doing those workshops. Her hope to do more workshops in the future and to pass the knowledge to the younger generations and to instill inspiration to the kids.
\n\nThese days, Etok has cut down on her throat-singing with Okto\u00e9cho due her regular day job. Although, she still has a couple events and workshops with Okto\u00e9cho she will be doing around the world. She will be throat-singing in Chile in January 2026, a workshop in April at the Sanaaq centre, a performance in Rimouski in July and a couple shows in Australia in September. She is also still pushing herself in jewelry making.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
